The NBN is having a moment, with speed upgrades rolling out and plenty of providers jumping on board.

Before we dive into how much these faster fixed-line NBN plans cost and some of the best deals going around, here's a quick look at what's changed.

NBN Co, and in turn providers, have upgraded speeds across NBN 100, NBN 250 and NBN 1000:

  • Home Fast (NBN 100) has jumped from 100/20Mbps to 500/50Mbps, making it five times faster. This will be the new NBN 500 speed tier.
  • Home Superfast (NBN 250) has jumped from 250/25Mbps to a speedy 750/50Mbps. This is the new NBN 750 speed tier.
  • Home Ultrafast (NBN 1000) doubles its upload speed, reaching up to 1000/100Mbps.

There's now a new NBN 2000 speed tier as well, offering download speeds up to 2000Mbps and upload speeds of 100–200Mbps, depending on your connection type.

You can get these speeds if you have a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) NBN connection. If you're unsure, use our NBN address checker to find out.

How much do these NBN speed upgrades cost?

The good news is that, similar to NBN Co, providers haven't hiked up prices for these speed upgrades either.

For example, the price you were paying for NBN 100 remains the same for NBN 500.

Here's a look at the average monthly prices you can expect across the newer speed tiers and the lowest price available (excluding honeymoon discounts):

Speed tierAverage monthly priceCheapest monthly price
NBN 500$101$80 (Exetel)
NBN 750$108$90 (Flip)
NBN 1000$128$95 (Southern Phone)
NBN 2000$175$149 (Southern Phone)

For comparison, NBN 50 plans cost around $85 a month on average.

If you've been wanting faster internet and your home can access these higher speeds, it might be worth considering an upgrade.

What are some of the best deals on these upgraded NBN plans?

We expect NBN 500 to eventually become the new norm for eligible households instead of NBN 50.

Here's a look at some of the best deals floating around as providers celebrate the launch of faster speeds.

How many providers are offering NBN speed upgrades?

So far, around 25 out of 46 NBN providers in our database have rolled out speed upgrades, whether it's adopting all of the changes mentioned or just one or two.

These include the likes of amaysim, Optus, Telstra, TPG, Superloop, Buddy Telco, Tangerine, Belong, Southern Phone and Aussie Broadband.

Others, such as Dodo and iPrimus, will be going live with changes on 1 October.

If you're eligible for NBN speed upgrades, your provider will (or has) reached out with details about the changes.

Let us know if you've noticed a speed boost, or if you've been told you should have faster speeds but haven't seen any difference.

We expect there may be some teething problems at first, especially if you have an outdated modem.
