iPrimus doubles download speeds for free: But do you need this speed?
iPrimus is more than doubling your internet speed for the first 6 months if you sign up to some of its fastest plans, giving you access to up to 1,000Mbps speeds.
Home internet provider iPrimus is running deals across its Premium (NBN 100) and its Home Superfast (NBN 250) plans.
You'll get double the speed for half a year without being charged extra for it:
- Sign up to the NBN 100 plan and get up to 250Mbps speeds for the first 6 months, instead of 100Mbps. This plan costs $90 a month, but if you end up wanting to keep the 250Mbps speeds, it'll cost you $115 a month.
- Sign up to the NBN 250 plan and get up to 1000Mbps for the first 6 months, instead of 250Mbps. This plan costs $115 a month for the first 6 months, but if you want to keep your gigabit speeds, it'll cost you $145 a month.
The offer ends on 3 October 2023 so you'll want to get in quick.
If you were to sign up you'd get:
- Evening speeds that are around twice as fast as what you're paying for
- A free modem valued at $120 - if you stay with the provider for 12 months or longer
- Unlimited data
- No set up fees and month-to-month plans
Is there a catch with iPrimus?
The speed upgrade is genuinely at no extra cost to you. Just remember that your speeds will drop back down after 6 months so you'll need to be ok with that, or pay extra to hop up a speed tier.
Other things to keep in mind with iPrimus include:
- iPrimus modem: While iPrimus offers a free modem for those who stay online for more than 12 months, if you were to end your plan earlier you would have to pay $120 for the device.
- Typical evening speeds: While iPrimus' fastest plans have the potential to hit a maximum of 250Mbps and 1000Mbps, the reality is, you'll get speeds that are closer to their advertised typical evening speeds. That's 200Mbps for its NBN 250 plan, and not recorded at all for its NBN 1000 plan. iPrimus also ranks towards the middle of the ACCC's quarterly broadband speed performance report, meaning its speeds may not always be reliable.
- Accessibility: If you are looking to get access to NBN 250 and NBN 1000 speeds, you'll need to make sure you have a Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) NBN connection. These are currently the only 2 connection types that are eligible to get a faster internet speeds.

Do you need these faster internet speeds?
While the speed upgrade is definitely a nice bonus, consider whether you need access to 250-1000Mbps speeds in the first place.
Households of 2-3 people should be fine on an NBN 100 plan, so unless you're a heavy internet user, you could be better off just sticking to a cheaper plan better suited to your needs.
