The mid-market rate is the current "official" exchange rate – the one you'll see on Google and other currency conversion websites.
Most money transfer providers make money by taking a cut of your transfer from the margins – by selling currency at above mid-market rates and buying currency at below mid-market rates.
Banks will often add as much as 5% to the mid-market rate, while specialist money transfer services tend to add between 0.5% and 2%, depending on the currency.
Generally, the goal when looking for the best deal is to find a service that's offering as close to the mid-market rate as possible.1

The exchange rate makes a substantial difference in how much money arrives at the other end of an overseas transfer. If you're looking for the best value for money, the first step is to compare the rates being offered by a number of services.
While NAB is an established, well-known option, keep in mind that a specialist money transfer service will often have lower fees and more favourable exchange rates than the banks.
