What our customers are saying

Looks like you've got access to an HFC connection

An HFC or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial connection is where the existing pay TV or cable network is used to connect your premises to the NBN, running from the nearest available fibre node.

An HFC connection allows you to access some of the fastest speeds on the NBN, up to 1000mbps, but your speed will be affected by how far you are from the fibre node.

It is not considered as reliable as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connections, but more stable than FTTN (Fibre to the Node), FTTB (Fibre to the Building) or FTTC (Fibre to the Curb).

How do I compare NBN plans?

Consider these 3 questions while you're comparing internet plans to make sure you find one that's right for you.

icon for willingness to pay

How much are you willing to pay?

Finder found the average broadband user spends $75 per month on their internet plan, but your budget might very well be different. The price of your plan will largely depend on what NBN speed you're after.

icon for speedometer

What speed do you want?

This depends on the size of your household and what you're planning to use the internet for. The general rule is: The more people in your home and the more time you're spending on the internet, the faster the speed you'll need.

icon for internet

How much data do you need?

Unlimited is usually recommended if you use the internet regularly. Lighter users can potentially get away with plans that come with a specific data allowance, for example 10-500GB a month. Keep in mind this will save you around $5 a month, but may not be worth it if you think you'll exceed your data limit.

To help you find the right NBN plan for your needs, you can use our handy filters on the comparison table above to narrow down your choices to your preference.

Which NBN speed is right for me?

There are 6 NBN speed tiers available in Australia:

1 user icon

NBN 12

Good for a single-person home with basic internet needs such as browsing, social media, and light streaming.

2 user icon

NBN 25

Suited to 1- or 2-person households that want to browse, stream and work from home.

3 user icon

NBN 50

Best for a 2-3 person household with medium internet usage such as streaming Netflix, browsing, downloading files and taking Zoom video calls.

4 user icon

NBN 100

For 3-4 people who are simultaneously online. You can avoid buffering internet issues while streaming, working from home or uploading and downloading files.

6 user icon

NBN 250

This could suit households with 5+ people that watch multiple 4K streams, are mostly working from home or are serious gamers.

multiple user icon

NBN 1000

Mostly suited to small businesses rather than your regular family home, unless there are multiple people living in your household with very heavy internet usage.

Hi Ken, it might work out cheaper for you to get an NBN plan separate to your streaming subscriptions as it’ll allow you to cancel services ad hoc when you don’t need them. You can check out our guide to the best NBN plans for this month https://www.finder.com.au/best-nbn-plans if you’re after a curated list. You can also take our quiz to find a plan suited to your budget and speed requirements: https://www.finder.com.au/broadband-plans. Hope this helps!

Which internet provider is best suited for financial market trading? Data is required in real-time. What particular characteristic should I look for in a provider? I have often found that, even though most providers boast of high internet speeds, market data is not provided timely; the rendering of “candle sticks” lags behind time. When I query this, the providers always have this answer: ” it’s all fine on our end, if you have any further problems, open a new request”.

Hello! You can always test your internet speeds whenever you want to see if your provider is delivering on their advertised download speeds. If they’re not, you can send them a screenshot of your results. The ACCC also publishes a quarterly broadband performance report for speed reliability of the top 12 NBN providers in Australia. Perhaps that can help you out: https://www.finder.com.au/broadband-plans/nbn/fastest-peak-hour-nbn-providers. If NBN isn’t meeting your requirements, you could try 5G home internet – that is if it’s available at your address. Here’s a guide to help you out: https://www.finder.com.au/broadband-plans/5g-home-internet-plans. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with. Cheers!

Looking to put internet in my place? Do you have to pay for the modem on top of the contract? As I can’t afford to buy one? Do they include in the plans if I choose one? Please help

      Mark Neilsen's headshotFinder
      MarkFebruary 9, 2024Finder

      Hi Chrissy,
Yes some providers do supply a free modem, but you’ll have to stay connected with them for a certain period of time. This can be anywhere from 6 months to 36 months depending on the provider and plan. Just keep in mind, if you leave the provider before that period is up, you might have to pay an outright fee for the modem for whatever time you have remaining on your contract, or you need to send back the modem in good condition within a certain timeframe or else again you will be charged a fee.
      Hope this helps.

I’m pretty sure we have FTTB in our unit and a speed check of 100/20 however we have a lot of buffering and difficulty connecting to the internet for 2 people.
Streaming tv and personal devices. Recently tried a different modem but probably worse that 6 months ago. Any idea why?

      Mariam Gabaji's headshotFinder
      MariamOctober 27, 2023Finder

Hi Lyn, I would recommend that you contact your internet provider directly about experiencing buffering internet for the last few months and give them details of the modem you’re using. If everything checks out from their end, then your second option would be to try out another provider. Just make sure that if you do decide to switch, you confirm that the modem you have is compatiable with their service. Hope this helps!
