Tips for picking up cash in Myanmar

The government recommends that Australians visiting Burma should exercise a high degree of caution. The government also advises that Australians should reconsider their travel plans if they’re visiting certain areas within the country — this information is available on the Department of Foreign Affairs Website.

If you’re concerned about your safety carrying a large amount of money on your person, be discreet once you collect your cash. Keep the money in a money belt strapped to your body, travel in a group and do not flash large wads of cash around on the street.

According to KBZ bank international remittance information at https://www.kbzbank.com/en/remittance/international-remittance/, Westpac Banking Corporation in Australia is one of their correspondent banks and it allows Account-to-Account transfer of money from Australia to Myanmar via SWIFT.

    Is it correct?

We are an NGO from Shillong, India running a project in Myanmar. We need to transfer fund to our partner in Myanmar for different training programs. What is the correct procedure to transfer fund to Myanmar from Shillong, India from an FCRA Account?

    • Staff
      ClarizzaAugust 18, 2016Staff

      Hi Bahrit,

Thanks for your question. The process will depend on the money transfer service you choose.

If you would like to use Western Union, you can go directly to the site from this page by clicking on the green “Go to site” button in the comparison table. Once on their website, click on the ‘Send Money’ tab and follow the instructions under ‘Sending money options’. You generally need to create an account with Western Union to proceed and an option to create an account will be available once you’re on the website.

Generally, you can send money from you bank account. Once you have followed all the steps for sending money, you will be given a number. The recipient then collects the cash from a Western Union agent, quoting this number.

      Hope this has helped.

      ShirleyApril 15, 2016Staff

      Hi Joseph,

      Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately it seems that MoneyGram doesn’t support international money transfers to Burma anymore. You may want to consider alternative service such as Western Union.

Your friend can do it a local Western Union branch or online.

      Hi Ashish,

      Thanks for your enquiry.

finder.com.au is an Australian online comparison website so we provide general information about international money transfer providers that transfer funds from Australia to various global destinations, but not from the US.

However, you might be interested to read our review on Western Union to help you complete this transaction.

      Hi Ven,

      Thanks for your enquiry.

Please note that finder.com.au provides reviews about how to send funds internationally, from Australia, and so this page is a guide about how to send funds to Myanmar from Australia, not India.

However, you might be interested to compare other international money transfer providers that allow you to complete this specific transfer here and here.

      Thanks,
      Belinda

Can you tell me how to transfer money Australia to Myanmar, I’m a bit confused.
When I filled the from, do I need to write the Western Union name, address or the recipient’s details?

    • Staff
      MarcMarch 30, 2015Staff

      Hi Pot,
      thanks for the question.

This will depend on how you’re sending money to Myanmar. If you’re sending it using Western Union’s Money in Minutes service or their bank account to bank account service, you’ll need to supply the recipient e.g your friend or cousin’s details.

If you’re sending it to a Western Union branch to be picked up as cash, you’ll need to fill out a send money form and select ‘cash pickup’.

Next, you’ll need to give the agent at the Western Union branch the completed form, and then give your recipient the tracking number, which they can bring to their nearest Western Union branch to pick up.

      I hope this helps,
      Marc.
