IG Markets is one of the world's longest-running online trading platforms, operating since 1974 with 300,000+ clients globally. In Australia, IG offers spot cryptocurrency investing through its IG Markets mobile app, in partnership with Australian exchange Independent Reserve and AUSTRAC registered.

Australians can buy, hold and sell 21 popular coins from $2 per investment, with a $50,000 maximum per individual trade. The product is intentionally simple: buy, hold, sell. There's no staking, no yield, no DeFi, and no withdrawals to a self-custodial wallet.

New customers can also claim up to a $100 welcome bonus on their first crypto investment. For traders who want leveraged crypto exposure, IG separately offers crypto CFDs through its main trading platform.

Welcome offer: Get up to $200 cash back into your IG account when you sign up, trade and hold crypto, shares and ETFs within 7 days. Offer ends 31 Aug 2026. T&Cs apply.

Pros

  • Low entry point. Start investing in crypto from just $2 per trade, with up to a $100 welcome bonus on your first investment via the IG Markets app.
  • AUSTRAC-registered with strong custody. Client crypto is held 1:1 in cold storage by an insured Qualified Custodian, with funds 100% segregated from IG's operations and independently audited.
  • Backed by a global trading giant. IG has been operating since 1974, is publicly listed on the FTSE 250, serves 300,000+ clients globally, and partners with Australian exchange Independent Reserve for crypto.
  • 24/7 trading with easy AUD funding. Buy, hold and sell anytime via bank transfer (OSKO), BPAY or PayID, with Apple Pay, PayPal and card support flagged as coming soon.

Cons

  • Limited coin selection. Only 21 cryptocurrencies available while other exchanges offer hundreds.
  • Mobile-only. Spot crypto is exclusively available on the IG Markets mobile app, not the web platform or the original IG Trading app, which means existing IG clients need to download a separate app and set up a new account.
  • Buy/hold/sell only. No staking, no yield products, no DeFi access, and no NFT support. IG is built for price exposure, not for using crypto on-chain.
  • $50,000 cap per trade. Single transactions are capped at A$50,000, and larger investments require multiple trades, which can be inconvenient for high-net-worth investors.

About IG Markets

IG Markets is the Australian arm of IG Group Holdings, a publicly listed UK fintech founded in 1974. The company invented financial spread betting and has since grown into one of the world's largest online trading providers, with more than 300,000 clients across 16 international offices.

In Australia, IG operates through three regulated entities, each handling a different part of the business:

  • IG Markets Limited (AFSL No. 220440) – CFD and forex trading

  • IG Australia Pty Ltd (AFSL No. 515106) – share trading

  • IG Digital Assets Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 37 686 210 462) – spot cryptocurrency, registered with AUSTRAC as a Digital Currency Exchange provider

For crypto specifically, IG launched its spot cryptocurrency product through a partnership with Independent Reserve, one of Australia's longest-running local exchanges. The product is delivered via the dedicated IG Markets mobile app (separate from the original IG Trading app and the desktop platform), and is designed around a simple buy, hold and sell experience for everyday Australian investors.

Client crypto is held 1:1 in cold storage by an insured, enterprise-grade Qualified Custodian, with funds 100% segregated from IG's operations and independently audited.

Globally, IG Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange (FTSE 250) and is regulated by top-tier authorities including the FCA (UK), MAS (Singapore), FINMA (Switzerland) and BaFin (Germany), in addition to ASIC in Australia. That breadth of regulation is unusual in the crypto space, where many platforms operate from offshore jurisdictions with limited oversight.

For Australian crypto investors, this means IG's offering sits in a small category: a globally regulated, ASX-comparable trading institution providing direct crypto exposure through an AUSTRAC-registered local entity, custodied by an Australian partner.

Maker fee explained. A maker fee is the fee charged when you propose an order for other traders to take. In other words, this fee is charged when you place a limit order to sell an asset, but that order is not filled immediately.

Taker fee explained. A taker fee is a fee charged when a buy order is matched immediately with a sell order on the books. This is the fee charged when you place a market buy order.

Is IG Markets safe?

IG Markets has several layers of regulation, custody, and operational safeguards that make it one of the more institutionally robust crypto platforms available to Australians – though, as with any cryptocurrency investment, the underlying assets themselves remain volatile and high risk.

Regulation. IG's spot crypto product is operated in Australia by IG Digital Assets Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 37 686 210 462), which is registered with AUSTRAC as a Digital Currency Exchange provider. AUSTRAC registration requires Australian crypto platforms to meet anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing (AML/CTF) obligations, including identity verification and ongoing transaction monitoring.

The wider IG Group is regulated globally by some of the world's most stringent financial authorities, including:

  • ASIC (Australia) — under AFSL 220440 and 515106
  • FCA (United Kingdom)
  • MAS (Singapore)
  • FINMA (Switzerland)
  • BaFin (Germany)

  • This breadth of regulatory oversight is unusual in the crypto industry, where many platforms operate from offshore jurisdictions with limited supervision.

Custody and asset security. Client crypto held with IG is not stored on IG's own balance sheet. Instead, the vast majority of assets are held by an insured, enterprise-grade Qualified Custodian in cold storage (offline, physically isolated from internet-connected systems).

    Key custody features include:

    • 1:1 reserves. IG maintains a complete reserve of all client crypto and fiat assets

    • Independent audits. External auditors verify every dollar and coin held on behalf of clients

    • Fully segregated accounts. Client assets are held separately from IG's operations; client crypto is never lent, traded, or commingled
    • Insurance. The Qualified Custodian holds the majority of client digital assets under enterprise-grade insurance coverage

    • IG Markets customer support

IG Markets offers customer support through multiple channels, delivered by Australian-based specialists familiar with the local crypto market and the IG Markets app.
