Qantas Frequent Flyer changes: How much are your points worth now?

Our expert analysis shows what's really changing.

Qantas has announced sweeping changes to its Qantas Frequent Flyer loyalty program that will roll out across 2025.

As someone who actively recalculates the value of Qantas Points every single month, the change that interests me the most is in the number of points you need to redeem reward flights.

For most Qantas routes, from August 2025 the points required will go up for booking Classic Rewards flights. These have long been the best-value way to use Qantas Points for most folks. (Upgrades have higher value but are harder to score.)

It's the first change to Classic Rewards values in 6 years, so it's worth taking a careful look. Right now, our Finder analysis shows a single Qantas Point used for Classic Rewards is typically worth:

  • 2 cents for Economy flights.
  • 8 cents for Business flights.

How much will that drop when the new values kick in August 2025?

New Qantas Frequent Flyer Points values revealed

Qantas hasn't issued a full list of all the new points values yet, but we can get a good idea from the examples it has shared for a handful of its own flights.

To work out the value of each Qantas Point, we need to find a typical fare for the route, subtract the carrier charges, then divide that figure by the number of points needed. Here's how that looks for a one-way Classic Reward flight booked for September 2025.

RoutePointsFareFeesValuePoints value
Economy Sydney-Melbourne9200$179.00$55.00$124.00$0.013
Business Sydney-Melbourne19300$554.00$76.00$478.00$0.025
Economy Sydney-London63500$2,240.00$263.00$1,977.00$0.031
Business Sydney-London166300$11,285.00$648.00$10,637.00$0.064

A simple way to see the difference is to compare how much 1,000 Qantas Points is worth on each route before and after the changes:

RouteOld/1000New/1000
Economy Sydney-Melbourne$16.75$13.48
Business Sydney-Melbourne$27.66$24.77
Economy Sydney-London$35.82$31.13
Business Sydney-London$74.87$63.96

Based on these examples, the value of Qantas Points for flights is noticeably dropping. It's particularly pronounced for the Sydney-London Business flight, since that requires more Qantas Points and the fees are going up as well.

If that pattern holds across all routes, I'd expect the value of a typical Economy flight redemption to remain at around 2 cents per Qantas Point. However, Business redemptions will likely drop from 8 cents to 7 cents per Qantas Point.

Remember, despite the rises, these all still remain a much better value use of Qantas Points than spending them on a hotel room, car hire or (ugh) a coffee machine. All of those give you less than 1 cent in value per Qantas Point.

So while your Qantas Points will be worth a little less come August, using them for flights is still your best approach for maximum value.

So what should you do with your Qantas Points?

If you've been saving up Qantas Points for a major trip, it may be worth booking it before August, so you can use fewer points. If you're running short, bonus points from a credit card sign-up could help you get there.

But I wouldn't panic. Even after the changes, Qantas Points are still going to be a valuable resource for scoring cheap travel. And remember: existing bookings you've already made are not affected.

Do you think Qantas will ever reduce the the silly very high 75k status points required to attain Life Time Platinum as I know a number of people that seem to get to a point in time where they then utilise a number of other airlines for their frequent flyers.

Hi Tom, Alas I think it’s highly unlikely that Qantas will ever lower the Lifetime Platinum total – it’s not designed to be easily attainable. I’ve calculated before that it would take the average traveller 51 years to qualify after reaching Lifetime Gold.
