Optus joins Telstra in raising mobile plan prices – how to avoid the hit

Optus is increasing the price of its postpaid mobile plans by $5 a month for both new and existing customers.
The changes will kick in on 18 May 2026 and will affect Optus Choice mobile plans.
Here's a look at the new pricing:
| Plan | Old pricing | New pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Small Choice Plus Plan | $55 a month for 50GB | $60 a month for 60GB |
| Medium Choice Plus Plan | $65 a month for 200GB | $70 a month for 240GB |
| Large Choice Plus Plan | $85 a month for 400GB | $90 a month for 480GB |
As you can see, you're also getting more data in return, ranging from an extra 10GB to 80GB a month.
However, the price increase will still sting for Optus customers, given that the cost of just about everything has gone up.
Optus told Finder it isn't immune to current economic pressures, adding that the price increases will help support network investment.
"We are making significant, ongoing investments in our network to improve coverage, speed and resilience, while also strengthening the service and support we provide to customers. Changes to pricing on some plans support this work," an Optus spokesperson said.
We're ensuring we give customers at least 30 days' notice, clear information, and support options. Customers can contact Optus to discuss their plan or seek assistance, including support for those experiencing financial hardship.
Telstra and others are also hiking mobile plan prices
Telstra is raising the price of its prepaid and postpaid mobile plans from 5 May 2026.
Most postpaid plans are going up by $4 a month. This is the second price hike in less than 12 months.
The starting price of its basic plan will soon be $74 a month for 50GB.
That's $14 a month more expensive than Optus's entry-level postpaid plan with 10GB less.
We don't know if Vodafone will change its postpaid plan prices this year, but for comparison, its basic plan is $53 a month for 60GB.
Elsewhere, Telstra's sub-brands, Belong and Boost Mobile, are also changing prices from 5 May 2026.
