Since tensions in the Strait of Hormuz erupted earlier this year, traders across the globe have noticed one thing in their portfolio – volatility.
As for cryptocurrency markets in particular, new data provided from Swyftx reveals how self-managed super fund (SMSF) holders navigated recent months, including which popular assets they shed – and which unusual assets they picked up instead.
Bitcoin's trading volume softened, but altcoins picked up the slack
Bitcoin trading volume among Swyftx SMSFs fell 12% month-on-month in July, but this wasn't an exit from the market – rather an apparent reallocation of capital.
Altcoins picked up momentum, with Ethereum (ETH) volume up 60% and Sui (SUI) jumping 147%.
At the same time, oil was still climbing toward a two-month high near $98 a barrel on July 25th, Bitcoin's own price held reasonably steady at $65,000, with volatility easing rather than spiking.
XRP breaks through to second-most traded asset
BTC/AUD remains the most-traded pair among Swyftx's SMSF accounts, which tracks with its position as the largest cryptocurrency by market value.
However, Ripple fans will be delighted (and the rest of us surprised) to learn that XRP/AUD came in second, with ETH/AUD third.
XRP's strong volume suggests a meaningful share of SMSF trustees are actively trading well beyond BTC, and still showing interest in altcoins despite bearish conditions across the sector.
SMSF buyers are still outnumbering sellers
Swyftx's SMSF accounts have consistently shown a stronger buy/sell ratio than the platform's standard retail accounts, and that gap widened further over the past couple of months.
June set a record for SMSF accounts, with buy activity outpacing sell activity by more than 3.5 to 1. Swyftx note that the overall trend has been accelerating, despite a slight dip to a ratio of 3.21:1 in July.
Stablecoin buying slowed down
Swyftx recorded a 36% drop in AUD/USDT trading volume in June.
A pullback in stablecoin buying could indicate trustees are redeploying that capital into more volatile assets like Bitcoin or XRP.
Alternatively, some trustees may be rotating capital out of crypto altogether, preparing for a change in interest rates on either side of the globe, or simply sitting on the sidelines till market conditions improve.
Key takeaways
- Bitcoin trading volume fell 12% month-on-month, while Ethereum (+60%) and Sui (+147%) picked up.
- BTC/AUD remains the top SMSF trading pair, with XRP/AUD in second and ETH/AUD in third.
- SMSF accounts hit a record buy/sell ratio of over 3.5:1 in June, easing slightly to 3.21:1 in July — still firmly buy-side.
- Stablecoin (AUD/USDT) trading volume fell by 36%, suggesting capital is either rotating into riskier assets or leaving crypto altogether.
How does crypto actually fit into an SMSF?
Self-managed super funds let trustees make their own investment decisions, rather than leaving them to a large super fund manager.
This gives you the option to hold cryptocurrency, provided the fund's trust deed and investment strategy allow for it.
Trustees also need to meet the ATO's usual SMSF obligations:
- You hold crypto for the sole purpose of funding retirement
- You keep it clearly separate from personal holdings
- Your investment strategy needs to clearly establish why it's right for your fund
Platforms like Swyftx exist to make that process more straightforward for trustees who want to include crypto in a fund they manage themselves. Their team can help you set up an SMSF trading account on Swyftx to allow for crypto investing.
Why some Australians are choosing Swyftx for their SMSF
Swyftx offers a dedicated SMSF trading account setup, along with reporting tools designed to make tax time more manageable for trustees and their accountants.
Security and customer support also matter to SMSF trustees, given they're personally responsible for how the fund's assets are managed.
Swyftx is registered with AUSTRAC as a Digital Currency Exchange provider and holds ISO 27001 certification for its information security management, with measures including two-factor authentication and cold storage for the majority of customer funds.
This year Swyftx picked up two Finder Awards – one for Most Loved Crypto Trading Platform, and the other for Legendary Service.

Risks of holding crypto in an SMSF
Crypto is a historically volatile asset class. Users are at risk of lost funds due to hacks, theft, personal mistakes or market volatility. If you're considering crypto for your SMSF, it's worth getting independent financial and tax advice specific to your fund before making any changes to your investment strategy.
