Woolworths raises mobile plans by up to 25%, but you could be better off

Woolworths says it's making changes to selected plans from April 24. And while prices will rise, you'll actually get more data with your new plan.

Woolworths is the latest mobile provider to update its plans, which means some consumers will be paying more for the service.

Here's what's changing:

  • Its $10 30-day prepaid plan with 1GB of data will now be a $12.50 prepaid plan with 2GB of data - that's 25% more expensive but with double the data.
  • Its $60 and $65 180-day plans are discontinued. The next closest is the $75 180 day plan which will give you 21GB of data but this is only available to existing customers.
  • The $150 365-day prepaid plan that includes 100GB of data becomes a $170 prepaid plan with 125GB.

All of the plans still come with unlimited standard national calls and texts as well as data banking options.

A Woolworths spokesperson told Finder "to continue providing plans at a great price that include plenty of data and the additional Woolworths Mobile benefits (such as 10% off your shop once a month and data gifting), we decided to say goodbye to some of the older plans and update some plans with more data and inclusions."

Woolworths joins a spate of other providers increasing plan prices

Unfortunately for all of us, Woolworths is not alone in lifting its prices.

Even with their cheapest plan going up by as much as 25%, they aren't the first to change their pricing.

The move from the supermarket giant follows rises by the big 3 telcos over the last 12 months which have all seen prices of pre- and post-paid plans increase.

The most recent of these was Vodafone, which made its entry-level SIM only mobile plan $5 a month more expensive, adding up to an increase of $60 per year.

Come July, Boost Mobile will follow Woolworths in raising its prices too.

Is Woolworths mobile still worth it?

While it is a hit to your backpocket, Woolworths' new pricing might actually favour some consumers, especially those who want a bit more data.

Each of the new plans will see the cost per GB fall, with Woolworths lifting the amount of GBs consumers will receive. This means it's now cheaper per 1GB of data you're getting, which is a good thing.

If you're someone that doesn't really use their allotted data anyways, these new plans might be less beneficial. After all, you're still going to be paying more for a product that you're not using up.

Woolworths Mobile will also be keeping the additional benefits including 10% off your grocery shop once a month (up to $50) and data gifting on its new plans.

What if I want to switch providers?

For those who want to opt out of Woolworths changing its pricing model, you'll have until the 24th of April before the pricing changes.

For those who have set up auto-recharge, your next recharge after 23 April 2023 will automatically move across to the new pricing model.

If you have not set up auto-recharge, you will not automatically be moved to another plan and will need to choose a new plan to sign up with.
