CoverMy Pet General Manager Grant Pugh has urged Aussies to consider the long-term expenses of owning a puppy rather than the upfront cost.

"Choosing a puppy is an emotional decision, but it's also a financial one and the cutest face shouldn't be the only factor. Many people focus on the price of getting the puppy without considering the ongoing costs they'll face over the next 10 to 15 years," he said.

"Responsible pet ownership starts before bringing a puppy home. Along with researching temperament, exercise and suitability, families should factor in unexpected veterinary costs, ongoing health care and insurance when comparing breeds."

Where Aussies can save on dog ownership

Between food, new toys, grooming and pet insurance, the costs involved with caring for a dog can feel relentless.

Finder research found that in July 2026, the average pet insurance premium was $126 a month.

For dog owners considering pet insurance, there are a few ways to protect your pet and cut the cost of your premium.

If you're after comprehensive cover, which protects dogs against accidents, illness and other health conditions, opting for a higher excess and a lower annual limit can make premiums more manageable.

CoverMy Pet offers 3 tiers of comprehensive cover, starting from $14.66 a fortnight, allowing Aussies to select the right policy for their budget.

Aussies can also opt for accident-only cover. These policies cover injuries from accidents, which can be ideal for new puppy owners only concerned about potential tumbles puppies typically find themselves in.

A new name simplifying accident-only dog insurance is Ruff 'n' Tumble, offering a flat $40 per month that does not increase based on your dog's age or after a claim.
