Points expert: Why I said no to this Qantas/Woolworths gift card deal

Key takeaways

  • Visa gift cards earn 10 times their value in Everyday Rewards points this week.
  • Because you have to pay a purchase fee, the points you earn may end up costing you money.

I love bonus points, but you have to assess every offer on its merits.

And that's why I'm not too excited about this week's Woolworths gift card offer.

From Wednesday 8 October 2025 through until Tuesday 14 October, you'll earn 10 times Everday Rewards points on $50 and $100 Visa gift cards (as long as you scan your Everyday Rewards card).

That's 1,000 Everyday Rewards points on a $100 gift card, which I would normally convert to convert to Qantas Points since they're worth more that way.

But there's a big catch.

You have to pay a $5.95 fee to activate the card, and that $5.95 fee eats into the points value.

Consider the $50 card. This will earn 500 Everyday Rewards points, which converts to 250 Qantas Points.

If you redeem those points for flights, you could get 2 cents per point, so that's $5 in value.

But you've paid $5.95 for the card, so you're not coming out ahead.

The $100 card gets you marginally ahead - you'll have around $10 in Qantas Points value, so you're ahead by just over $4.

Want more points right now?

Supercharge your points with a credit card sign-up bonus.

Incidentally, you're limited to 5 cards a day, but that doesn't matter much since there are better ways to earn more points anyway.

If you like keeping a gift card spare for emergency giving, you might as well earn some bonus points from it.

But ultimately I'll be passing this time around.
