Aussies love welcoming new furry family members over the holidays, but many overlook one major cost that can quickly add up.

With Christmas right around the corner, many Aussie families may be expecting more than just a hamper.

While pets make for the perfect addition to any family at any time of the year, a lot of us tend to get swept up in the moment and forget one important detail, vet care.

According to new insights from Pet Insurance Australia, the cost of veterinary treatment in Australia is now on par with human health care.

“Veterinary treatment in Australia is now mirroring human healthcare, from high-tech diagnostics to specialist care — and so are the costs,” says Nadia Crighton, spokesperson for Pet Insurance Australia.

“Now is the perfect time for families to have open conversations about responsible pet ownership and budgeting. Pets are for life — not just for Christmas — and understanding the true cost of care from day one can help prevent heartbreak down the track.”

Find the right policy for you

Rapid advancements in diagnostics and care facilities are said to be some of the biggest drivers for cost increases, with pharmaceuticals now accounting for 30% of all vet-care expenses.

Long-term treatments for conditions such as arthritis and diabetes could also be costing Australians thousands of dollars every year.

"Today's pets have access to exceptional treatments and medications, and as a result, they're living longer, healthier lives," Crighton explained.

"It's crucial that anyone considering pet ownership understands the long-term commitment involved, including the ongoing costs of caring for a companion who could live well beyond 12 years."

What you need to know if you're bringing home a pet this Christmas

Many experts recommend taking out pet insurance prior to bringing your pet home or as soon as possible.

This is because insurers will often not cover conditions that appeared before you took out cover.

Purchasing a policy when your pet is a puppy or kitten also means you'll pay lower premiums.

With Christmas only a few weeks away, it could be a good idea for future pet owners to get ahead by picking up a pet insurance policy before the arrival of their new addition.

You can compare several insurers and their policies to ensure you find the right option for you and your budget.
