Two major gym brands are dangling BIG savings on memberships if you take out health or life cover.

Looking to save cash after the Christmas splurge? You may be surprised to learn that taking out insurance could lead to hundreds of dollars of savings. But that's exactly what gymgoers can get by becoming an AIA Vitality member.

AIA Vitality: Get discounts and get fitter

Your first step towards gym savings is to sign up for an eligible health insurance or life insurance policy with AIA. You'll then have access to AIA Vitality, the insurer's long-running health and wellbeing programme that rewards better lifestyle choices.

How much could I save?

Virgin Active, which has gyms across Sydney and Melbourne, offers 50% off at its gyms through its partnership with AIA. You can also get half off with Fitness First, which operates around 60 clubs across New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria and Queensland.

Finder contacted 2 Virgin Active gyms in Sydney and confirmed that new customers can get a 3-month Premium membership costing $65 per week, with a commitment period of only 1 month.

With your 50% discount via AIA Vitality, that'd be $32.50 off each week, meaning you can enjoy a sweet $390 in savings ($32.50 x 12 weeks) over 3 months. By repeating this each quarter, you could save $1,560 in a year.

If you are fully committed to a year's membership with Virgin Active, then it's worth looking into the cost of their 12-month plan to see if it's a better option for you.

What else should I know?

4 key things to keep in mind are:

  • AIA Vitality membership won't cost you anything – it's baked into the cost of eligible insurance plans.
  • You need to sign up for your insurance via an AIA insurance reseller or through a broker (read the step-by-step process here).
  • AIA told Finder your insurance policy must have a minimum premium of $300 to qualify, and you can keep taking advantage of the gym savings so long as you're an active AIA Vitality member.
  • You'll need to be a full AIA Vitality member to score 50% off at Virgin Active; those on AIA Vitality Starter (a more basic tier) can get 30% off.

This deal is one of a host of savings you can make with AIA rewards. Other perks include 25% off fitness trackers (for example, Fitbit, Garmin) and 50% cashback on flights.

Additionally, you can unlock more benefits by going to the gym, completing fitness tests and attending health check-ups. You can also get insurance policy discounts in the future as your membership status level increases.

While you can't get AIA insurance directly on Finder, you can compare the latest life insurance rewards schemes or find a health insurance deal.
