Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8: A new foldable joins the lineup, but prices are up

Samsung's latest foldable lineup includes an all-new, wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which carries over from last year's model with a new name, and a slimmer Galaxy Z Flip 8.

How much do the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 cost in Australia?

Here's the full rundown of prices for Samsung's latest foldables.

Unfortunately, prices have gone up this year.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra costs between $100 and $350 more than last year's Z Fold 7, while the Z Flip 8 is between $150 and $250 more expensive.

Samsung says this is down to rising component costs and memory prices.

When can you pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 in Australia?

Pre-orders open on 23 July and run until 13 August 2026, with the phones on shelves from 14 August.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 specs and colours

Here's a rundown of the specs before we dig into what's new across the lineup.

Galaxy Z Fold 8: The all-new, wide foldable

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the brand new device this year, with what Samsung calls a "first of its kind" passport-like shape built around the way people watch, read and game.

"The Galaxy Z Fold 8 represents a new chapter for foldables, and it is the first of its kind in Australia," said Nathan Rigger, Head of Product, Mobile eXperience at Samsung Electronics Australia.

He added that 84% of Australians rate size and portability as an important reason for choosing a phone.

The rumours around this phone were largely spot on. Here's what to expect:

• At 201g, it's Samsung's lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet.
• It has a 7.6-inch main display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. The main screen reaches up to 3,000 nits and has an anti-reflective coating.
• The display adapts to what you're doing, with a 10:16 cover screen when folded and a 4:3 main display for gaming, films and reading when open.
• It has dual 50MP wide and ultra-wide cameras, plus a Dual Recording mode that captures both sides of a moment at once.
• It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, which Samsung says is its most powerful processor customised for Galaxy.
• It comes with a 4,800mAh battery and charges to about 63% in 30 minutes with a 45W adapter.

I've already had some hands-on time with it, and it's the foldable I'm most excited about so far, largely because the Ultra is a bit too bulky, so it's nice to have another option.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: Familiar foldable with a new name

The Z Fold 8 Ultra is essentially the new version of last year's Z Fold 7, but with a new name.

• It's slimmer, measuring 4.1mm when unfolded and weighing 215g. The slimmer design comes from Samsung's new Flex Titanium technology, which adds a titanium layer to the folding screen. According to Samsung, this helps keep the phone thin while improving durability, absorbing knocks and helping the crease stay less noticeable over time.
• It has an 8-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover screen, both at 120Hz with Vision Booster.
• It features a 200MP main camera, a new 50MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.
• It can record 8K video with improved colour controls and better low-light performance.
• It also runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
• The 5,000mAh battery supports 45W fast charging, which can get it to around 67% in 30 minutes, plus 20W wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8: The thinnest, lightest Flip yet

The Z Flip 8 has had a handful of improvements, but nothing that dramatically separates it from last year's Z Flip 7.

• It weighs 180g and measures 6.1mm when unfolded.
• It has a 6.9-inch main display and a 4.1-inch cover screen, both with Vision Booster.
• The redesigned FlexWindow puts apps, insights and Galaxy AI features on the cover screen, so you can do more without opening the phone.
• It has a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera and FlexCam for hands-free shots.
• Super Steady video stabilisation now includes a Horizontal Lock, which keeps your footage level even when the phone tilts or moves.

Galaxy AI features across the new Z series

Samsung says Galaxy AI has been optimised for each foldable, with the same core features running across the lineup.

Here are the highlights, according to Samsung:

• Now Brief serves up personalised insights based on your routine, and now surfaces security and privacy alerts too.
• Now Nudge will turn those insights into action, suggesting next steps such as checking your schedule or saving a location when plans come up in a conversation.
• Gemini Intelligence helps you get things done in fewer steps, and Gemini Notebook pulls your notes, images, recordings and files into one workspace.
  One UI 9 adds an AI Assistant Activity dashboard so you can review what AI has done in one place.
• The Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra come with a new My FanCam feature, which automatically tracks your subject and reframes your footage for social media, so there's less editing to do.

The new Galaxy Z series also comes with a 6-month free trial of Google AI Pro, including 5TB of cloud storage, which usually costs $32.99 a month.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2

Samsung also launched two new smartwatches, with a big focus on proactive rather than reactive health tracking.

Galaxy Watch 9

• It's 25% lighter and made from lightweight aluminium.
• It has a 390mAh battery, a 3,000 nit display and a new Qualcomm Wear Elite chip.
• New preventative health features include vitals tracking, a heart health score and daily cardio load.
• It starts at $649 (40mm), rising to $699 (44mm), $749 (40mm LTE) and $799 (44mm LTE), in Graphite and Cream (40mm) or Graphite and Silver (44mm).

Galaxy Watch Ultra 2

• It has an 800mAh battery, which Samsung says is 35% more capacity than before.
• The 1.52-inch display hits 5,000 nits, which Samsung says is the brightest of any smartwatch.
• It's 25% lighter, with pro-level sport tracking including trail running.
• It's the first Android smartwatch with a built-in dive computer, developed with Mares.
• It costs $1,299 and comes in Titanium Grey and Titanium Silver.
