Key takeaways

  • Optus prepaid mobile plans will cost more from 30 September. For example, its 28-day expiry plans will increase by $5 per recharge.
  • It is also retiring a number of legacy prepaid mobile plans from 24 August. Existing customers will be moved to its Flex Plus prepaid plan instead.
  • Optus is the last of the big three telcos (alongside Telstra and Vodafone) to increase the cost of its prepaid plans this year.

All of Optus's prepaid mobile plans will become more expensive from 30 September.

This includes its 7-day, 28-day and long-expiry prepaid plans.

Plan nameOld price and data allowanceNew price and data allowance
Optus Flex Plus 7-day expiry$13 for 5GB$15 for 6GB
Optus Flex Plus 28-day expiry$39 for 25GB$44 for 35GB
Optus Flex Plus 28-day expiry$49 for 35GB$54 for 45GB
Optus Flex Plus 28-day expiry$59 for 45GB$64 for 55GB
Optus Flex Plus 186-day expiry$180 for 90GB$200 for 100GB
Optus Flex Plus 365-day expiry$350 for 220GB$395 for 240GB

As you can see from the table, the 7-day expiry plan will cost $2 more, while all 28-day expiry plans will increase by $5 per recharge.

The 186- and 365-day options will rise by $20 and $45, respectively.

The silver lining is that Optus is boosting data allowances by 1-20GB depending on the plan. Speed caps of 250Mbps on its 7-day and long-expiry prepaid plans will also be removed.

We saw similar price increases from the telco giant last year as well.

Its prepaid prices increased between $1 and $30 per recharge.

Existing customers impacted as well

The price and data changes listed above will impact existing customers, but that's not the only change.

Optus is also removing several legacy prepaid plans from 24 August. Affected customers will be moved to its Optus Flex Plus plan.

Optus isn't alone in raising prices

Out of the big three, Optus is the last to make changes to its prepaid plans.

Vodafone's price hikes took effect earlier this year (April). Most of its prepaid plans increased between $1 and $30 per recharge.

Similarly, Telstra's prices increased between $2 and $45 per recharge on 5 May.

Both telcos also added more data across most of their plans.
