27% of Australians say travel insurance offers “poor value”: here’s why we disagree

New research has revealed that 1 in 7 Australians are still travelling without travel insurance.
According to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), travellers under 30 and those born overseas are the biggest group to travel uninsured, with 23% confessing they did not purchase a travel insurance policy on their most recent trip.
Australians heading abroad to visit family, friends or returning to their home country were also most likely to skip coverage, claiming their familiarity with the destination meant they didn't need cover.
Executive Head of Travel at Allianz Partners Australia, Damien Arthur warned this overconfidence can backfire on even the most experienced travellers.
"It is concerning that those travellers who might decide against purchasing insurance are doing so because they think a destination is safe, because this doesn't give consideration to accidents, medical emergencies and travel interruptions that can be very costly if travelling without insurance," he explained.
"The reality is nobody plans for things to go wrong. Even in destinations considered safe, such as Japan, medical emergencies can result in claims worth tens of thousands of dollars, covering hospital care, extended accommodation and repatriation."
