Do I need a balance transfer credit card?

Balance transfers are a special type of credit card offer designed to help people who are struggling to pay down their existing credit card debt.

Maybe you have a big balance on your current credit card, and you're getting charged a lot of interest. Maybe you have more than one credit card and you're struggling to pay them all off.

It works like this:

  • You apply for the new card and get the balance transfer offer approved.
  • Move your old balance (or balances) onto the new credit card, which charges 0%.
  • You cancel your old credit card(s) so you don't keep racking up new debt.
  • Start paying off your balance on the new credit card before the 0% offer runs out.

A good balance transfer offer gives you 0% for 12 months or more. The Latitude Low Rate Mastercard Balance Transfer offer gives you 0% for 24 months.

What are the costs of a balance transfer?

When you do a balance transfer you usually have to pay a balance transfer fee. This is often 3% of your balance.

And you also have to pay the card's annual fee. For the Latitude Low Rate Mastercard Balance Transfer offer the annual fee is $69 and the balance transfer fee is 3%.

Is there a catch?

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can get a $100 gift card. That's a pretty nice Finder Reward!

The biggest catch with any balance transfer is simple: pay your balance off before the 0% offer runs out.

Because once that 0% offer ends, you're getting charged interest again. And you could end up back at square one.

Australians are actually pretty good at paying off card debt. The average credit card balance is $3,346. But we pay most of that off.

The average interest-incurring balance (that is, an unpaid balance) is $1,774. But with credit card interest rates going up to 20% or higher, you don't want to let that kind of debt roll along month after month.

Get a 0% offer, transfer the balance, pay it off, live your best debt free life.
