Rojie Tadros is the founder and managing director of Payday Deals, a leading Australia-based online marketplace. What was your first job?

When I was 14, I started my first job as a dishwasher in a local restaurant. From there, I continued to work in both hospitality and retail (usually racking up around 60 hours per week) while I completed a Bachelor of Business (Marketing/Management) at Swinburne University of Technology.

Once I graduated, my first corporate job saw me working for Sensis White Pages in a fast-paced sales and marketing role. It was then that I realised that I'm good at what I do; I consistently exceeded sales targets, achieved top performance company-wide awards and all expenses paid trips, and was promoted 3 times in 3 years.

From there, I continued a career in sales and marketing for digital marketing agencies in Melbourne, before launching Payday Deals in late 2017.

What's your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement is starting my first ecommerce business and receiving my very first online sale. From concept to execution, that first sale was a dream turning into reality for me.

What's something that you have learned in business that took you by surprise?

I learned the importance of always being prepared and never leaving anything to chance. Don't believe everything you hear – do your own homework and research and be sure you're always informed around the latest industry news and trends.

How do you plan on growing your business in the near future?

At Payday Deals, we understand that experiences are always more memorable than products. So, we focus on providing each customer with the best possible customer interaction and more personal care than other online retailers. From the minute we receive an initial product or payment enquiry, our customers know they can count on fast responses and step-by-step guidance whenever they need it.

We've replicated the "in-store experience" by adding much-needed human interaction to the online buying experience, achieved by having a strong customer experience team here in Melbourne. Our team is happy to pick up the phone to call the customer, and has personally taken customers through the consideration and evaluation stages of the journey, helping them to navigate the check-out process and explaining our buy now, pay later payment options.

Payday Deals is driven by delivering the service and products that Aussies need. We work with Australia-based suppliers and are committed to providing fast deliveries Australia-wide. Our Melbourne team and response times are faster than most others can offer, allowing us to build advocates for the brand that helps to promote our USPs with others, so we can grow quickly yet organically.

What other business leader do you most admire and why?

I admire Elon Musk as a leader. He's a genuine visionary with a strong work ethic and imagination. Musk is the most influential business leader and inventor of our time – he has achieved the impossible and continues to evolve experiences through technological advancements.

What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received?

"You must do what others won't to achieve what others don't."

This is a Henry Rollins quote that has been adapted to business many times over the years. It reminds me that sometimes you have to put in that extra piece of hard work if you want to realise your ambitions.

What advice would you pass on to someone starting out in your area?

I have two key pieces of advice for anyone just starting out:

  1. You have to always be learning and adapting – always! For me, audiobooks are a great way to absorb information and continue to learn while on the move.

  2. Don't skip market research. The key to success is to understand what competitors are doing, and then to do it better.
