Key takeaways

  • Anthropic is going public. The AI giant filed its S-1 form with the SEC and will list on the NASDAQ.
  • We don't know the pricing yet but analysts predict a mid-November or possible December launch.
  • What's next: Australian investors will be able to invest via NASDAQ or a local Australian offering.

Anthropic, the AI giant behind Claude has just filed its public S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission as it prepares to go public.

Anthropic plans to list on the tech-heavy NASDAQ in the US under the ticker symbol ANT. Anthropic had previously filed a confidential S-1 back in June. The public S-1 filing is a much bigger step towards an initial public offering (IPO).

We don't currently know what share price Anthropic is targeting, or how much money they are hoping to raise.

Going public will allow the AI company to raise funds it badly needs to continue building data centres and creating enough compute to power its popular AI tools and software.

But it also allows the public to see inside the company's complicated, extraordinary financials.

By the numbers

Anthropic is growing fast. It recorded revenue of around $16.3 billion in the six months to June 2026, a year-on-year growth rate of 1,300%.

But the S-1 also notes that "We do not expect our revenue will continue to grow at comparable rates."

And Anthropic has incurred net losses each year. That's normal for early-stage, fast-growing tech companies but the numbers are still staggering.

Anthropic recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion in the same timeframe as its $16.3 billion revenue.

In terms of ongoing cost commitment, Anthropic has around $630 billion in compute contracts with companies like Microsoft, Amazon and SpaceX. Anthropic needs this compute to power its AI tools.

It's an enormous commitment, and most of it can't be cancelled by Anthropic.

How can Australians invest in Anthropic?

There are several ways Australian retail investors will be able to buy in once Anthropic goes public.

  1. Buy shares via a broker with access to the NASDAQ. Most major investing platforms in Australia allow local retail investors to trade shares on US markets. You won't be able to invest in Anthropic directly via the ASX.
  2. Buy shares directly via an Australian offering. Anthropic has said it is planning to register an Australian prospectus with ASIC. This should allow Australian investors to register with participating brokers and invest in Anthropic at the IPO price.
  3. Invest in Anthropic via an ETF on the ASX. Once Anthropic goes public, Australian investors can also invest indirectly via a NASDAQ ETF, or another ETF with a heavy tech or AI focus.
