Money Hack: How to get 10% off at Woolworths once a month

This Woolworths credit card perk could help you save up to $50 on your grocery shopping every month.

If you buy most or all of your groceries at Woolies, then getting a supermarket-branded credit card could give you access to a number of handy perks. As well as doubling as your Woolworths Rewards card (the barcode is printed on the back of your credit card, so you can scan, pay and earn points with a single piece of plastic), these credit cards offer a 10% discount on one shop per month, capped at $500 per shop (or $50 off). This means that, over a year, you could save up to $600.

The Hack

This perk is available to Woolworths credit card customers on selected weekend dates each month. Once you have your credit card, you’ll be notified by email before the start of each month’s offer period. Then, when the selected weekend rolls around, you’ll get 10% off the first eligible purchase you make at Woolworths, either in-store or online.

For in-store shopping, you’ll need to buy your groceries between 12:01am on the selected Saturday and 11:59pm on the selected Sunday to be eligible for the discount. You also need to scan the Woolworths Rewards barcode on the back of your credit card and pay with your credit card.

If you’re shopping online at woolworths.com.au, you can get the discount for the first shop you make between 12:01am on the selected Friday and 11:59pm on the selected Sunday. You also need to spend a minimum of $30 or more for pick-up orders or $50 or more for home delivery orders. To get the discount, enter your Woolworths Rewards number at the checkout and pay with your credit card.

Note that this offer is only available for a single shop during the selected dates, so you won’t be able to double up on your savings by doing one shop online and one in-store during the offer period.

The discount also comes with exclusions for some items you may buy, including bag and crate service fees, smoking and tobacco products, gift cards, mobile recharges, Woolworths Mobile, travel cards and tickets, Woolworths flowers, carpet care and lottery products. It’s also not available with any vouchers, offers or Delivery Saver items.

Unfortunately, you’ll also miss out if you live in Tasmania, as Woolworths Rewards is not available there. Instead, you may want to check out this rundown of frequent flyer and reward schemes that are available for Tassie residents.

If you live anywhere else in Australia, getting 10% off a grocery shop each month could add up to hundreds of dollars over the year. In fact, the value of this benefit could easily outweigh the cost of the annual fees that apply to Woolworths credit cards. For example, if you got the Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card – Finder Only Offer, you would only need to get 10% off a shop worth $40.84 each month to balance out the standard $49 annual fee (which is waived in the first year).

For the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card – which has a standard annual fee of $169 (discounted to $99 in the first year) – getting 10% off a shop worth $140.84 each month would be enough to offset this cost. If you spend more than this amount on shopping each week, it’s likely you’ll get even more value from the once-per-month discount. So if you’re keen to take advantage of this offer, make sure you look at the full range of features and costs for Woolworths credit cards so that you can decide if one will work for you.
