Which industries do the BRW Young Rich make their money in?
If you want to make a fortune under 40, technology is your best bet.
The 2016 BRW Young Rich list is dominated by technology millionaires, with Atlassian co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar topping the list with a combined worth of $4.68 billion. The duo have topped the list every year since 2012, and have invested a decent chunk of their money in other local startups.
Third and fourth place go to Campaign Monitor co-founders Dave Greiner and Ben Richardson, who are valued at $543 million -- some $4 billion below the top-place getters. Perth property developer Paul Blackburne takes fifth place with $483 million.
The collective worth of the 100 individuals on the list is $12.3 billion, with an average wealth of $123 million. Depressingly, just 8 of the 100 are female, demonstrating yet again that we're a long way from financial equality for the sexes.
Here are the industries where the Young Rich made their cash. Technology has a clear lead, followed by financial services and retail.

28 of the top 100 reside in Victoria, 27 in NSW, and 25 overseas. Western Australia has 5, Queensland has 3, and South Australia and the ACT have 1 each. Apparently being young and wealthy is not compatible with Tasmania or the Northern Territory.
To qualify for the list, you have to be an Australian citizen under 40. People who inherit wealth aren't eligible. And based on this year, you want to be a tech-savvy male living in Victoria.
