This clever Woolworths gift card hack could score you a free flight.

Thinking about a big purchase at JB Hi-Fi? Here's a way to score a stack of Qantas Frequent Flyer points at the same time.

From today until Tuesday 21 November 2023, Woolworths is offering 20x Everyday Rewards points on Ultimate Him, Kids, Teens and Thanks cards. One of the places you can redeem those cards is JB Hi-Fi. You can use these gift cards at other stores as well, but we're focusing on the JB example as it's such a popular retailer. (Note that the Ultimate Her card is also part of this offer but can't be used at JB Hi-Fi.)

Here's how it works:

  • Grab as many cards as you need. The maximum you're allowed with this offer is 5 fixed-value cards per day. So that means the most you can typically acquire in a single day is $500 of cards – enough for home appliances, an entry-level phone or a smaller TV. You can buy more cards during the week if you're aiming for a more expensive item.
  • Make sure your Everyday Rewards are set up to convert to Qantas Points (this is always the best use for them for maximum value in my view).
  • For a $500 spend, you'll end up with 10,000 Everyday Rewards points, which converts to 5,000 Qantas Points.
  • You have to buy the cards in store for this deal - online doesn't count.

What I love about this is that there's no service fee for cards, so the Qantas Points are effectively free. You shouldn't ever make purchases purely for the points, but if you're planning to buy some new tech soon (maybe in the upcoming Black Friday sales?), this is a simple way to sweeten the deal.

This offer pops up every couple of months. Just 3 weeks ago, we saw a similar deal with Ultimate cards, although that one allowed you to but more in a single day. This one comes up often enough that I don't feel compelled every single time it happens (unlike, say, the rarer deals on Netflix cards).

If you had a particularly expensive purchase in mind, you could pick up 5 $100 cards every day for a week, and end up with 35,000 Qantas Points. Most folks won't go that far, but it's definitely worth considering as a strategy if you want to buy some new tech at JB.
