Game of phones: 13.4 million Aussies stay loyal over saving on mobile costs

  • 13.4 million Aussies haven’t changed phone providers in the last three years
  • 64% haven’t changed providers because they like sticking to what they know
  • finder.com.au rounds up the best value phone deals

29 December, 2016, Sydney, Australia – Despite telcos competing for new customers through cheap deals, 64% of Australians prefer to stick with the same provider than jump ship, according to finder.com.au, Australia’s most visited comparison website.1

Based on an estimated 20.9 million mobile phone subscribers in Australia, this represents 13.4 million Aussies2 who could be on a better deal.

The new finder.com.au survey of 2,026 respondents reveals in the past three years just 36% of Aussies -- equivalent to 7.6 million smartphone users -- have switched phone providers.

Alex Kidman, telco expert at finder.com.au, says Australians could be saving money by making the switch.

“Considering major telcos are offering ‘no strings attached’ contracts and compelling deals with good value for money, it’s surprising to see that most Aussies aren’t shopping around,” he says.

Looking at those who have stuck with the same provider, over two thirds (68%) do so because they like being with the same company.

One in six (16%) stay with the same provider as they don’t have much choice in their area, 15% say it’s too much effort to change and 7% find it too confusing.

“While many of us like sticking to what we know, it is a comfort that comes at a cost,” says Mr Kidman.

“Those living in rural or regional areas may feel like they don’t have much choice, but the rise of virtual mobile providers using the networks of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone mean that they do actually have choices to make.”

“Even if you have a convincing reason to stick to the same carrier, it’s worth checking what their new deals are, because chances are you could be on an older, worse value plan unless you speak up,” he says.

“Whether you’re fully metropolitan or remarkably rural there’s really no excuse for not shopping around,” says Mr Kidman.

Of those who did switch in the last three years, more than half (53%) jumped ship to get a better deal and 30% looked elsewhere because they wanted better coverage.

For 21%, the pursuit of a new phone made them change providers and one in five (20%) decided to shop around as their contract was running out.

“Saving $25 or $15 each month may not seem like much, but add that with a few data excess charges and you’re spending an extra few hundred dollars that could be put towards your next holiday,” says Mr Kidman.

“We’re increasingly using our smartphones for everything from watching Netflix to video-calls with colleagues and those activities drive data consumption. Our plan needs change over time so it’s important to regularly reassess if we’re getting the best bang for our buck.”
