WA budget 2023: Households to get $400 off their electricity bills
The WA government will give residents another $400 to help with their energy bills, as an iron ore led cash bonanza leads to another budget surplus.
The Western Australian government has come out with it's 2023/2024 budget and energy bill relief is at the forefront.
All households will be offered electricity bill credit of $400.
It gave the same $400 electricity bill credit in 2022 and $600 the year before.
Some WA residents will also be eligible for a further $350 energy bill relief payment announced in the federal budget.
This means eligible households may get $750 off their electricity bill in the next financial year.
"We know many WA families are doing it tough, and that's why my Government is using our strong financial position to deliver cost of living relief to every WA household and small businesses in the State," Premier and Treasurer Mark McGowan said in a press release.
Who is eligible for the $400 electricity rebate in WA?
The $400 energy bill relief payment will offered to all households, meaning everyone's eligible.
On the flip side, the helping hand coming from the federal government is more targeted.
This will be targeted towards those "most in need" including pensioners, veterans, seniors and other concession card holders, as well as recipients of the Carer Allowance and Family Tax Benefit.
Easing cost of living pressures: McGowan
The $400 electricity bill credit comes as Aussies continue to battle cost of living pressures.
While WA is not alone in facing these pressures, the government says it will do what it can to help out.
As it currently stands, inflation in Perth is at 5.8% while nationally it's at 7%.
This is the lowest in the country but the WA's state budget is still focused on relieving monetary struggles.
"The McGowan government has responded to the cost of living pressures with a $715 million package to support households and small businesses across the state in the 2023-24 budget," the budget says.
"This includes a minimum $400 electricity credit for all WA households, with targeted relief of $826 for those households most in need. Furthermore, increases in household fees and charges will be kept to 2.4 per cent in 2023-24, well below the projected level of inflation."
