Ouch, another NBN price hike is coming – here’s how it will affect you

Key takeaways
- Wholesale NBN prices are set to rise by around $2 to $4 a month.
- There's a strong chance providers will pass those costs on to customers, as we've seen it happen over the last couple of years.
- NBN Co's chief customer officer, Anna Perrin, recommends reviewing your internet plan to make sure it still suits your needs and budget.
NBN Co will implement its annual wholesale price changes from 1 July 2026.
These are the prices charged to providers.
Here's a look at how they're changing:
| NBN wholesale speed plan | Old price | New price | Price increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 Basic Bundle | $12.01 | $12 | -$0.01 |
| NBN 12 | $33.47 | $35.59 | $2.12 |
| NBN 25 | $35.07 | $36.15 | $1.08 |
| NBN 50 | $55.26 | $57.60 | $2.34 |
| NBN 100/20 | $58.53 | $60.85 | $2.32 |
| NBN 100/40 | $61.53 | $64.60 | $3.07 |
| NBN 500 | $58.53 | $60.85 | $2.32 |
| NBN 750 | $63.93 | $67.12 | $3.19 |
| NBN 1000 | $73.93 | $75.88 | $1.95 |
| NBN 2000 | $115 | $119.04 | $4.04 |
This is a steeper increase than last year, when wholesale NBN prices rose by up to $1.71 a month.
Whether customers feel the impact will depend on the provider, with some likely to pass the cost on and others likely to absorb it.
For example, last year, more than 20 providers increased prices, typically by around $2 to $6 a month, with a few exceptions lifting prices by more.
However, there were some price cuts on faster NBN plans, including NBN 1000.
More broadly, the price gap between lower and higher NBN speed tiers has been shrinking over time.
We expect providers to announce price changes any time between now and 1 July.
What should I do given that NBN prices are increasing yet again?
Our top tip is to take this time to compare NBN plans to see if you can get a better deal.
Providers often offer big 6-month and sometimes even 12-month sign-up deals, which can help you save in the long run.
NBN Co chief customer officer Anna Perrin is giving similar advice.
"We understand that price changes can raise questions for customers, which is why we encourage people to review their options and check they're on the plan that best suits their needs and budget," Perrin said in a media release.
Value and choice matter, and this is reflected in the strong choice amongst retailers, with more than 150 nbn providers offering a wide range of plans and price points for customers.
