This will come as a blow to Optus customers, but the good news is you can still watch Optus Sport content for a discounted price elsewhere.

The speculation is over. Optus Sport will shut down on 1 August 2025, ending a nine-year run as it hands over the rights to the English Premier League, FA Cup, J League and NWSL to Nine Entertainment and Stan.

I'm an Optus customer. What happens to my Optus Sport subscription now?

One of the perks of signing up with Optus has been discounted access to Optus Sport.

The good news is that if you're an Optus customer, you can continue streaming the Premier League and other content on Stan from 1 August.

Here's what to do or expect:

  • From 1 August, your Optus Sport subscription will end, and billing will cease.
  • Optus is sending customers communications via email and messages within the Optus Sport app with details on how to continue streaming on Stan (more on that shortly).
  • If you're currently paying $9.99 a month, your price will stay the same with Stan for the next three football seasons.
  • Plus, you'll get free access to Stan Premium content until January 2026. After that, Stan will offer a discount, but it's up to you whether you want to sign up or just stick to watching football like you have been with Optus Sport.
  • Optus will also provide "detailed information and special offers in the coming days to ensure the transition to Stan is as smooth as possible."
  • If you're on an annual Optus Sport plan, Optus will provide a prorated refund by 15 July 2025.
  • Prepaid customers using Optus Sport as an add-on will get access to Stan discounts.

How do I access Optus Sport content on Stan?

If you don't have a Stan account, simply use the same email address as you have for Optus Sport to sign up.

Follow the prompts to finalise the setup. It should be that simple.

For any issues, contact Optus at 1800 501 356.

You can also head to its support page for details on everything from what this means for your data and account information to what happens if you have a gift card or access code for Optus Sport.

Why is Optus Sport shutting down?

Optus has decided to focus on its "core operations in telecommunications."

"One of our key priorities was to find a home for Optus Sport content which would take the game forward and enable all Optus Sport subscribers to continue to receive uninterrupted access to all their favourite football action," Stephen Rue, Optus CEO, said in a media release.

"Optus Sport customers and the game of football will be in great hands at Stan, and we know the game will receive the broadcasting priority it deserves from an organisation whose speciality is delivering quality sports programming to its customers."

UPDATED: We added new information regarding access to Stan Premium for free until January 2026 and what happens after.
