I finally switched my NBN… I should’ve done it sooner. Savings of $1,000+ incoming

Key takeaways
- Over the next 2 years, I'll save $1,036 on my internet plan by switching to Optus
- The switching process was simple and I didn't experience any downtime or interruption to my internet.
- This offer with Optus and Finder Rewards ends June 30 – run, don't walk!
I'd been paying $109/m for my internet and, like most people, I hadn't switched in a while.
I assumed switching would be a hassle and I've have downtime.
Turns out, I was wrong.
I switched through Finder Rewards and now I'm paying $99 a month (actually $79 a month for the first year) plus I've earned a $250 Visa gift card.
The biggest thing holding me back was all the "what ifs"
I had this in the "too hard basket" for way too long, because I worried about things like:
"Will I lose internet access while I switch?"
I didn't. The Optus activation will override the old connection and for most NBN connection types, the switch happens in about 30 minutes. My new service was activated with barely any interruption.
"Isn't switching complicated?"
Not really. I signed up online and the new provider handled most of the details. It took about 10 minutes!
"Do I have to cancel my old plan?"
This was the bit I wasn't sure about. In my case, my old service was cancelled once the transfer happened, and this is what happens most often. The new provider (for me, Optus) should sort it all out in the background, and you just receive a cancellation notice and final bill from your old provider.
"Will I need a new modem?"
Not necessarily. My existing modem was compatible, so I could have kept using it, but it was about 5 years old and Optus offered a free modem worth $306 (as long as I stayed connected – good retention ploy!). So I got a new modem, but you don't have to.
My total savings surprised me
Between the lower monthly bill, the first-year discount and the $250 gift card, switching ended up saving me way more than I expected.
Here's my savings over 2 years added up:
- Discounted rate of $79/m for the first year = $30/m or $360
- Discounted rate of $99/m for the first year = $10/m or $120
- Modem cost of $12.75/m for 2 years waived = $306
- Finder Rewards Visa gift card = $250
- Total = $1,036
Moral of the story: if you've been putting off comparing your internet plan because it sounds annoying... I get it. I did exactly the same thing. But it was much easier than I thought and my bank balance is going to be over $1,000 better off for it!
Compare your plan with Optus today but hurry – this deal ends June 30, 2026.
