Big W member prices: Better than Woolworths?

Everyday Rewards members now get extra discounts - here's what to watch out for.

When Woolworths recently launched special "member prices" for Everyday Rewards members, I analysed the offers and found that the specials varied widely in quality, with discounts ranging from a mild 6% off to an impressive 50% off.

That pattern has continued in subsequent weeks. There are some good bargains, but they're rarely the cheapest example of what you can buy in the category.

Now sister store Big W is also getting in on the member pricing act for Everyday Rewards customers.

It's kicking off with 20% off kids clothing and babywear from Thursday 28 September until Wednesday 4 October.

"We are excited to bring Everyday Rewards Member Pricing to life for the first time in Big W with exclusive savings on kids and babywear," Everyday Rewards managing director Hannah Ross said in a statement.

20% off an entire category is more impressive than the Woolworths approach, though of limited use if (like me) you don't have kids.

As usual, details matter. Party costumes aren't included, so no Halloween bargains with this discount.

Remember too that if you're a member of Everyday Extra, you can get an extra 10% off one Big W shop each month. You can stack that with the 20% off deal.

While Everyday Extra membership costs $7 a month (or $70 a year), the 10% off a monthly shop at Woolworths means that most households that shop there would save more than the cost of membership each month.

The main Everyday Rewards scheme has 14.5 million members signed up, though that figure includes both active and inactive members.
