ALDI's at it again. First groceries, then mobile plans, insurance and holidays, and now it's adding solar bundles to the mix.

ALDI will be offering solar packages to households across selected postcodes in NSW, QLD, VIC and the ACT through its partnership with Tempo.

This rollout builds on a 'successful trial' in Victoria and hopes to save households on their energy bills.

What are ALDI's solar packages like and how much do they cost?

Here's what you need to know, along with the price breakdown:

  • There are 2 packages on offer, with customers being able to choose the battery size that best fits their needs and budget (more on that in just a sec).
  • Each system comes with a 6.6kW solar setup and a 5.5kW inverter, giving you everything you need in one package. This size is good for medium to large households.
  • If you're not familiar with the term, the inverter converts solar energy into electricity that your home can use.
  • The solar panels come with a 10-year warranty and a 25-year performance guarantee, providing peace of mind.
  • Blackout protection for your solar panels will be included in the upfront cost.
  • Everything can be tracked through ALDI Solar's online portal, such as suitability checks and installations by a certified provider.
  • According to ALDI, there are potential savings of up to $3,600 over 12 months on energy bills using a home in South West Sydney as an example. Just keep in mind that this figure can vary between households depending on factors including how much energy you use.
  • The supermarket giant also said the average household could achieve a payback period of 3-4 years, but it's best to keep in mind that timeframes can vary due to factors such as the cost of electricity from the grid, a household's energy use, weather and location.
  • You can use the calculator on ALDI Solar for an estimate of payback periods.

The price breakdown includes savings from the federal government's Small-scale Technology Certificates (STC) rebate.

What battery size do I need?

The battery size you opt for will depend on your household size and energy consumption. Here's a rough guideline, but you always ask the installer for more details:

  • Average households (3-4 people) might need at least a 10kWh battery.
  • Larger households (4+ people) might need at least a 13.5kWh battery.

ALDI's timing hits the mark, given that Finder research has found two things: energy bills are one of the top 3 most stressful expenses for 29% of Aussies, and 22% of Aussies say installing solar panels has had the greatest impact on reducing their energy costs.
