Ampol Energy is pulling out of the retail electricity game after three years, with its customers in Australia set to be moved over to AGL.

If you're currently with Ampol Energy to supply electricity to your home, then you might have received an email explaining the handover to AGL.

Here's what it looks like:

According to Capital Brief, the move allows it to concentrate on areas where it can compete more effectively and adapt quickly to the evolving EV landscape.

I'm an Ampol Energy customer. What happens now?

Based on communications from Ampol Energy and Finder's chat with AGL, you don't have to do anything right now.

  • Your electricity retail service and fuel discount will continue as usual under your Ampol Energy Plan terms and conditions.
  • To elaborate, your current electricity rates still apply. If anything were to change, AGL will communicate this keeping relevant energy laws and regulations in mind.
  • Ampol Energy is working closely with AGL to ensure customers have a smooth transition.
  • AGL's still waiting for the deal to go through. Once it's finalised, it's expected to start contacting customers over the following months, though there's no exact timeline just yet.

"This deal is consistent with our focus on delivering value for our customers and fuelling innovative, sustainable growth," an AGL spokesperson told Finder.

We welcome these new customers who once the deal is finalised will gain access to our core energy services, along with the opportunity to benefit from our bundled offerings as we work to connect our customers to sustainable future.

Are AGL's electricity plans worth it?

AGL is one of Australia's three largest energy retailers, offering electricity, gas, mobile and internet plans for households after a simple, all-in-one utility solution.

Some of the extra perks you get include:

  • AGL Rewards for exclusive discounts and offers
  • Bundling discounts
  • Electricity plan with Netflix (ad-tier subscription)
  • Peak Energy Rewards program to earn bill credit by shifting your home energy use
  • Electrify Now tool for a personalised estimate of energy bill and/or carbon savings when you take steps to electrify your home
  • A mobile app to track your energy use, get customer support, manage your billing and more
  • EV energy plans are available, including options to buy an EV charger
  • Solar energy plans are available with higher feed-in tariffs than regular electricity plans. Option to buy solar batteries or solar battery bundles
  • 6 cents off per litre at participating BP stations, running until 31 December 2025.

So yeah, AGL has a fair bit going for it (though it doesn't quite match Ampol Energy's fuel offer), but at the end of the day, your first point of comparison should be to stack it up price-wise.

Click the blue button to compare AGL's energy plans against what you're currently paying.

Right now, we don't know what prices AGL will offer existing Ampol customers, or if it'll change anything at all, so take the research with a grain of salt.

And if you don't feel like waiting around for the transition, compare energy plans from other providers and see if you can score a good deal.
