More than 300,000 NSW toll users will be eligible for car rego discounts in 2019
Transport for NSW has extended its Toll Relief program for another year and has expanded it to more drivers.
From 1 July 2019, drivers who spend $15 or more per week on tolls will be eligible for up to 100% off their rego costs. Transport for NSW launched the one-year Toll Relief program in July 2018 and has decided to extend it for another year. They have also lowered the entry-point from $25 to $15, which will more than double the number of drivers eligible for toll relief.
If your rego is due before 1 July 2019, you are currently eligible for free rego as long as you can show you have paid $25 or more per week in the 12-months prior to renewal.
After 1 July 2019, the same deal applies, but you'll also be welcomed into the fold and offered a 50% discount if you can show you've spent at least $15 per week.
The scheme is available for any of the following privately registered vehicles:
- Four-wheel drives
Another big change to the program is that, as of July 2019, you and other drivers will be able to pool your total spend across multiple vehicles as long as the tags are registered to one account. This will help families who wouldn't have been eligible individually.
This isn't the only way Transport for NSW is trying to ease drivers' burdens. Back in November 2017, Transport for NSW announced a set of CTP reforms that are still helping drivers to this day. For example, you can save money on CTP by using the government's CTP Green Slip comparison site, which offers quotes from all CTP insurers in New South Wales.
More ways drivers can save
Given their high rate of driving, heavy toll users should consider stronger forms of insurance on top of their CTP. If you're on the road a lot, you can save even more by comparing comprehensive policies that will pay for any damage you cause to other people's property or your own.
