amaysim’s big changes to international roaming: How does it stack up now?
amaysim launches 4 international roaming packs to use in 90+ countries.
Budget provider amaysim has replaced its existing 'Pay As You Go' credit for international roaming in favour of data and call packs.
Here's what they look like:
- Small Talk ($20/365 days) - offers 100 minutes calls, 100 SMS.
- The Works ($25/365 days) - offers 50 minutes calls, 50 SMS, and 1GB data.
- Just Gigs ($50/365 days) - offers 5GB data.
- The Epic ($70/365 days) - offers 100 minutes calls, 100 SMS, and 5GB data.
You'll be able to sign up by following the prompts on the amaysim app or via the its customer service platform. This should simplify things when you're on the move.
Are amaysim's international roaming packs any good?
The value of amaysims' new international roaming add-ons will come down to what you need and how you'll use your phone when you're overseas.
For example, if you just need to make a few calls and texts, it's 50 minutes, 50 SMS and 1GB of data will get you through.
If, however, you need to make long phone calls or need to stream large amounts of data, you'll be better off with a local SIM instead.
This is especially true if you're not going to have access to Wi-Fi all that much.
How do they compare to other international roaming options?
In contrast to other international roaming add-ons, amaysim's latest offers can be a bit hit and miss depending on what you're after.
For example, Vodafone charges $5 a day to use your mobile plan overseas as you would in Australia.
Optus, meanwhile, charges between $5 per day for 5GB of data.
Both Vodafone and Optus stack up better if you want more data and unlimited calls and texts. But you might end up paying more by signing up with them in general.
So, what's the bottom line?
amaysim seems better for people who don't want to be stranded overseas and will eventually get a local SIM.
Or, for those who need very little out of their phone plan when travelling for extended periods in the year.
Make switching mobile providers a breeze by learning if your current phone is eSIM compatible.
