Key dates explained
RBA meeting
On the first Tuesday of every month (excluding January), the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) meets to review the official cash rate. It may choose to increase or decrease this rate, which has a significant knock-on effect for the interest rates offered on things like home loans, personal loans and savings accounts.
Whether the cash rate rises or falls, this can be a good time to review your financial products. If you have a home loan, you might want to consider refinancing to a better rate.
If you have a personal loan, you might want to consider getting a debt consolidation loan. For savings accounts, you might want to review high-interest savings accounts and see if you could get a better return elsewhere.
Consumer Price Index
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of household inflation calculated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It measures how much the cost of living has increased over the last 12 months, based on a basket of standard household goods and services.
The CPI also affects things like HECS-HELP debts, which are indexed each year based on this figure.
