Wild weather warning: Will home insurance cover you? Here’s what to check

Australia has had its fair share of wild weather this year - and it's kept the NRMA claims department working round the clock.
New data has revealed the total number of weather home insurance claims for the year until August is already 32% higher than in 2024.
NRMA reported it received over 9,400 wild weather claims during winter alone, with 82% of those claims related to storm damage.
Wind was also a major contributor to the rise in claims, which NRMA Insurance meteorologist and analyst, Kathryn Turner, says could continue to be a leading culprit for future claims.
"Don't underestimate wind as a hazard," she said. "Spring marks the transition into the severe storm season for Australia, and for the season coming we may see an increase in east coast lows and severe thunderstorms across eastern Australia."
NRMA explained that wind can be a powerful force as it can heighten the impact of storms, bushfires and cyclones.
"Once wind speeds or gusts reach 40 km/h it is no longer safe to carry out maintenance tasks such as trimming trees and branches or inspecting roofs, so choose a calm day to prepare your outdoor areas for storms or wind," encouraged NRMA Insurance executive manager property claims fulfilment, Scott Lindsay.

Australians concerned about future weather (and rising premiums)
Following the wild winds and brutal cold Australians battled late last month, it's no surprise many households are nervous about keeping their homes in one piece.
NRMA found that a considerable 72% of Australians are concerned about strong winds damaging their property, which could also prompt many to consider what it could mean for their home insurance premium.
Recent figures from Finder revealed that a staggering 69% of homeowners had an increase in their premium within the last 12 months.
"Sweeping storms, bushfires and mass rainfall create property damage every year – with events becoming more frequent and intense," said Finder's personal finance expert, Taylor Blackburn.
"The family home is the largest financial asset for many Australians, so insurance must not be overlooked."
For many Australians looking to get the comprehensive coverage they need, it's worth remembering the power that comes with making the switch to ensure homeowners are covered for the right events while keeping premiums low.
