Chasing that Europe summer has just about become the norm in Australia with travellers flocking in droves year after year.

However, recent research has shown that rising living expenses has prompted some travellers to rethink their getaways.

According to a recent report from Wendy Wu Tours, Aussies are forgoing Europe for Asia in an attempt to save money, while still enjoying a well deserved break.

Luscious landscapes, cuisine and culture were among the top reasons for the change in destination.

Real Finder case study

Attesting to the latest Aussie travel trend was Finder’s own personal finance specialist, Taylor Blackburn, who visited Bali in early November.

"I was recently in Ubud and loved how affordable it was.

"It's great to eat light and cheap. Nasi Goreng regularly cost between $7-$10. I got a massage for $20 or our 2 hour drive from the airport only set me back $35.

"I love being generous when I can, but also am a tight budgeter. When your money doesn't get swallowed up by food and expensive services, it is easier to be more generous with the locals looking after you."

Don't forget travel insurance!

Older Aussies spend big while Gen Z travels on a budget

The Journey Ahead report noted that approximately 47% of travellers intend to spend $5,000 - $10,000 on their next trip, with Aussies over the age of 55 intending to splurge the most on their next holiday.

And while some generations are more inclined to spend more than others, the report noted an overall shift toward quality travel, as Aussies get smarter with their itineraries and budget to balance a quality trip while keeping their savings in check.

The concept of thinking outside the box for a getaway is nothing new for many avid travellers, particularly as wallets get tighter.

In fact, recent Finder research found that 48% of Aussies have gotten creative to build a travel fund.

Sacrificing social activities (25%), recycling bottles and cans for cash (21%) and selling unwanted household items and clothing (14%) were among the top three tactics Aussies have done to take a much-wanted vacation.

But as a word of caution for any Aussie in the midst of building their travel stash, make sure to include a comprehensive travel insurance policy to ensure you're covered if your dream getaway becomes a nightmare.
