Bargain hunters: 8.1 million Australians plan to shop the EOFY sales

Millions of Aussies are hoping to snap up a deal during the end of financial year sales this year, according to new research by Finder.
Â
A Finder survey of 1,015 respondents revealed more than 1 in 3 (38%) Australians plan to shop the end of the financial year (EOFY) sales this year – up from 31% a year ago.
Â
That's equivalent to 8.1 million people who will be looking to bag a bargain.
Â
The average shopper is planning to spend $2,316 across the sales. This is down from $3,170 last year – a 27% decrease.
Â
Chris Jager, shopping expert at Finder, said rising costs have pushed many to rein in non-essential spending.
Â
"While more people will be shopping the sales this year, on average Aussies will be spending less overall.
Â
"It reflects a shift in consumer behaviour – we're seeing a slight rise in bargain hunting, but also a growing restraint when it comes to spending.
Â
"Rather than splurging, many are looking to stretch their dollar further by focusing on essentials or only focusing on the biggest discounts."
Â
Aussies will spend the most on travel and leisure ($1,300) on average, followed by home and living ($408), family and lifestyle ($273), and fashion and personal care ($265).
Â
Jager said the EOFY sales are one of the best times to grab a bargain this side of Black Friday.
Â
"If you're after a big-ticket item like a TV or fridge, or your winter wardrobe is in need of an update, there will be some great deals on offer.
Â
"You can check out the latest offers and discounts across a huge range of products on Finder's EOFY sales hub."
Â
Of those who plan to shop, 55% will do so both online and in person.
Â
A quarter (26%) will shop exclusively online, while 1 in 5 (19%) will do so in person.
Â
Jager reminded Aussies that a good deal is only worth it if you need the item.
Â
"It's easy to get caught up in a sales frenzy. Before you hit the purchase button, ask yourself this question: 'Would I buy this if the sale price was the normal retail price?'.
Â
"In other words, don't be swayed by big discount numbers and only focus on the stuff you need."
