Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: Which model should you buy?

Samsung's latest foldable is bigger, lighter and more powerful than its predecessor. But is it worth the upgrade?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 officially hits stores on 3 August.
It is being heralded (by Samsung) as the best foldable on the market - just like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 before it.
Which begs the question: should you snap up the new phone, or does last gen's model provide better bang-for-buck?
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: The specs
It has become increasingly common for phone manufacturers to only make incremental changes to each year's flagship. (Case in point: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 didn't even bother to upgrade the camera.)
Fortunately, the Fold 7 bucks this trend with significant improvements across the board.
It has slightly larger displays, a more powerful main camera (200MP vs 50MP), a faster processor, longer battery life and a tougher, more durable aluminium frame.
It also comes with a handful of new AI software tools including Seamless Actions, which allows users to complete multi-step tasks across different apps with a single query.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: Price
Like most new phones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 comes with an irritating price bump.
Prices now start at $2,899, which is around $150 more than the Flip 6 at launch.
To its credit, Samsung has taken some of the sting out by offering $200 off the 512GB version when you pre-order. This makes it $50 cheaper than the Flip 6.
Samsung is also throwing in a pair of Galaxy Buds3 Pro earbuds valued at $399 when you use the code LIVEBUD3PRO.

To get the deal, you need to pre-order the phone before 3 August. The price then goes up to $3,099.
Meanwhile, the Flip 6 has failed to see much movement on its price since launching in 2024. For example, JB Hi-Fi currently has the 512GB model for $2,937 - a miserable discount of $12.
The cheapest, readily available price we could find was $1,499 at Kogan - but that was for a pre-owned/refurbished model.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: Camera
Samsung has borrowed the 200MP main sensor from the Galaxy S25 Ultra for the Fold 7.
This is a significant upgrade to the Flip 6's 50MP snapper especially in optimum lighting. The images it produces are sharp, bright, vibrant and full of detail.
The Main Screen Camera has also been improved: it's now 10 megapixels with a wider 100° angle, compared to the Flip 6's 4MP/85° angle.
The other cameras (ultra wide, telephoto and front facing) are identical on both phones.
If photography is especially important to you, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7's superior wide-angle lens is worth the upgrade. With that said, both phones are capable of taking perfectly good photos.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: Battery
On paper, the Fold 7 and Fold 6 have the same 4400 mAh battery.
However, Samsung has made some tweaks to the Fold 7's components and software to make it more energy efficient. This translates to an extra hour of video playback for a total of 24.
An extra hour might not sound like much, but you'll be glad for it when you're down to your last battery bar segment without a charger.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: Durability
In addition to beefing up the camera, Samsung has added some additional protection to the Fold 7 to protect against accidental drops.
The cover screen is now encased with Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, a glass-ceramic material that provides enhanced drop performance and better scratch resistance than the Flip 6.
The case is made from Advanced Armor Aluminum which is around 10% harder than the previous model.
Samsung has also strengthened the hinge mechanism for a longer lifespan.
For most users, these improvements won't matter, but if you accidentally drop your phone onto a hard surface it could make all the difference.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Fold 6: Which model should you get?
Hands down, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the better buy, especially if you pre-order the 512GB model.
In addition to being a superior phone, it's actually cheaper than the 512GB Flip 6.
Here's a breakdown of pre-order deals from select retailers and telcos. (Remember, to get the discount you need to buy before 3 August.)
