Key takeaways

  • Qantas is offering a 20% discount on the points needed to book a domestic Classic Reward flight in Economy.
  • That represents a solid way to get value from your Qantas Points.
  • What's next: The deal only runs until 25 May 2026.

I often tell people that domestic Economy Classic Rewards flights are one of the best ways to use Qantas Points, and that's truer than ever this week.

Qantas is temporarily cutting the number of Qantas Points needed for domestic Economy Classic Rewards by 20%.

You'll have to get in quick - the offer only runs until 25 May. But you can book flights for the period from 1 June 2026 to 9 May 2027, which gives a lot of scope.

What does that 20% difference mean in practice? Let's use Sydney-Melbourne as an example.

Normally, a one-way Classic Reward flight in Economy between those two cities would require 9,200 Qantas Points, plus around $57 in fees and charges.

With the discount in place, that drops to 7,400 Qantas Points.

This means you'll get more effective value from each point. On the Sydney-Melbourne route, you'll typically pay at least $199 one way in Economy.

Score that as a Classic Reward with the 20% off and the effective value per 1,000 Qantas Points spent is around $19 - a very solid outcome.

And if you find a Classic Reward seat during peak times, when the typical one-way price can rise to $300 or more, you'll get even more value.

You'll still need to hunt around to find Classic Reward seats, but those are easier to score in Economy than at the pointy end of the plane.

Example Qantas flight

I'm definitely looking into using my Qantas Points for a couple of bonus trips to Brisbane and Adelaide.

I'll also look carefully at regional flights, as these often have higher prices but don't necessarily need huge numbers of points.

Pedant note: The discount doesn't apply to Jetstar flights, but those already require fewer points than Qantas for the equivalent route.

Happy flight hunting! And if you're looking for more novel ways to increase your Qantas Points bank, look into how to earn them at ALDI via DoorDash.
