If re-elected, the NSW Liberal and Nationals government said it will slash energy bills.

The NSW government has announced the Energy Bill Saver program which will see $250 slashed from household energy bills.

If the Liberal and Nationals government is returned to power, the program will run from 1 July to 31 December 2023.

Who will be eligible for the $250 payment?

Fortunately, the Energy Bill Saver program will be open to all NSW households. This includes existing energy rebate recipients.

How will I claim the $250 payment?

To receive the $250 off your energy bill, you'll need to compare energy plans via the government's Energy Made Easy website between 1 July and 31 December 2023.

Do I need to wait to switch?

No, if you compare and switch energy plans now you won't be prevented from claiming the $250. In fact, it's encouraged.

By comparing and switching to a cheaper energy plan, your household could unlock up to $400 in savings.

Why is the NSW government doing this?

The cost of living is one of the greatest challenges households are facing at the moment.

In January, 23% of Australians listed their energy bill as one of their most stressful expenses, according to Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker.

This means energy bills are the fourth most stressful household expense after housing, groceries and petrol.

While federal government intervention has seen electricity prices fall, gas prices have continued to rise. In NSW the increase to the yearly bill could be just under $100.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said, "We know households are feeling the pinch right now and that's why we will provide immediate bill relief as well as help families get a better energy deal.

"This is $250 in short-term energy savings while at the same time ensuring NSW households can slash their bills into the future."

Opposition leader Chris Minns hit out at the announcement, "The government announced a cash handout based on a website for NSW residents.

"... It's a one-off payment, just for one 12-month period and that the following 12 months electricity prices are expected to jump by an additional 30%."

The government is committing $500 million dollars to the NSW Energy Bill Saver program. It's similar to the Power Saving Bonus program launched by the Victorian government in July last year after the official energy price increase.

How else can I save money on my energy bill?

There's no need to wait for energy bill relief to come to you – take action now:

  • Comparing and switching to a cheaper deal could save you up to $400.
  • Follow energy-saving tips to cut costs before your next energy bill. This includes simple things such as turning off appliances at the power point when not in use and having shorter showers.
  • Invest in solar power for long-term changes by producing your own energy.

Hi Tracey, rebate will only be available if the NSW govt is re-elected. If that happens, they’ll be opening up the $250 rebate from 1 July. We will post another news story when that happens!
