Every year we get one special day to dedicate to celebrating the mothers in our lives, and with celebration often comes presents. Finder surveyed 1,080 Australians to find out what they're getting their mums this Mother's Day, and how much they'll spend.
In 2023, 63% of Australians plan to buy their mum a gift for Mother's Day. On average, those buying gifts plan to spend about $82. That's equivalent to $1 billion nationwide.
This is lower compared to what Aussies were willing to shell out in 2021 when Australians were predicted to spend around $108 each.

Women (66%) are more likely than men (60%) to buy a gift for their mum on Mother's Day. However, men are planning to spend slightly more on their presents ($83) compared to women ($81).
When it comes to the age groups, gen Z Aussies are spending the most this Mother's Day at $99 each. This is followed by gen Y at $87, gen X at $77 and baby boomers at $42.

A separate study showed that 90% of Aussies take convenience into consideration when purchasing gifts. They're also more inclined to buy presents if they're conveniently advertised in a shopping centre. In fact, a third of shoppers hold off on buying presents until the week prior.
It's no surprise then that flowers (24%) are the most popular gift that Aussies plan to buy this Mother's Day. This is followed by a card (22%) and chocolates (18%). Only about a 10th (11%) of Aussies plan to go out of their way to make their own food or gifts.
