Millions of Australians with extras cover could be sitting on a gold mine of unused benefits.

So consider this your official reminder to take advantage of your remaining extras benefits.

With the festive season in full swing, many Aussies are gearing up for one of the busiest times of the year — and it could see them missing out on perks they're entitled to.

Many leading health insurers reset their annual extras limits on January 1, giving Australians less than 90 days to take full advantage of their private health insurance benefits.

And with the average Australian potentially spending over $1,000 a year for extras cover, Finder's personal finance expert, Taylor Blackburn, has encouraged Aussies to get in while they still can.

"The clock is ticking on your private health extras benefits, so use them or lose them."

Understanding the fine print of your private health insurance policy

Every private health extras policy offers an annual limit, which is the maximum amount you are eligible to claim across different services.

These benefits do not roll over into the following year, which means you could be missing out on claims for services, such as optical, dental, physiotherapy, remedial massage, nutrition and more.

For Aussies looking to maximise their benefits before the clock strikes midnight on 31 December, Blackburn shared a few suggestions.

"Book in preventive care like dental check-ups and check your policy limits. Might be a good time to finally see the physio or get those new prescription glasses."
