The catch with online sign-up discounts and how you can keep premiums low
Online discounts almost always apply to your first year's premium only.
Then what tends to happen next is once the introductory discount rolls off, your premium at renewal can jump, sometimes by more than the discount saved you in the first place.
That's why it's important to review your car insurance before its annual renewal, especially if you've made no claims that year and have kept a positive driving record.
Your no-claims bonus should also transfer with you when you switch.
If you'd rather not switch, this is where it pays to pick up the phone. ASIC findings from August 2026 showed that of the drivers who contacted their insurer before renewing, 31% got a lower premium without changing their cover at all.
