Founder of EatBoxNow – 2020-present

John Nguyen is the founder of Korean BBQ meal box delivery service EatBoxNow. John's story is one of business acumen and determination in the face of adversity. John, like many others, lost his job due to COVID-19. However, he saw this as an opportunity to don his entrepreneur hat by launching his own startup, despite the rocky economical climate. Within a week, John had launched EatBoxNow.

Find out more about John and his success in a pandemic below.

What was your first job?

My first professional job was working as a Business Improvement Analyst for Allianz. However, at 15 years old, I also assembled electronic downlights for my dad's furniture manufacturing business.

What's your proudest achievement?

I was fired from my corporate job during a global pandemic but used this as an opportunity to start EatBoxNow – restaurant-ready meal boxes delivered to people's homes. I am proud of the fact I was able to get a startup running in a week, secured over 1,000 orders, and was able to make over $15,000 per week.

What's something that you have learned in business that took you by surprise?

The power of Facebook marketing. It's unbelievable! Initially, I thought, I would just tell my friends on Facebook about EatBoxNow, but it turns out that selling on Facebook has delivered way better outcomes!

How do you plan on growing your business in the near future?

We plan to expand to Vietnamese and vegetarian boxes and to look at entering other states/territories through franchising.

What other business leader do you most admire and why?

Richard Branson – he was able to establish a brand ethos that's unique, memorable and able to span multiple industries. He is truly inspirational!

What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received?

Believe in yourself and trust your gut.

What advice would you pass on to someone starting out in your area?

Don't do hospitality. Sell online, but don't sell food online because that's what I do! haha :)
