What was your first job?

When I was 13, I got a part-time job packing the ice machine at a local service station in Sydney on the weekends. Bending your back teaches you a lot about life. I came to understand the importance of hard work, the value of working people and to always keep turning up for your shift, no matter the circumstances.

What's your proudest achievement?

That's an easy one. Without a doubt, my proudest achievement would be my two beautiful young daughters. They're the light of my life and reason for living.

What's something that you have learned in business that took you by surprise?

Sometimes, when you least expect it, those closest to you can let you down. When it happens, it's heartbreaking but the important lesson is resilience. The ability to bounce back and keep moving forward is everything.

How do you plan on growing your business in the near future?

We have big plans for Macquarie Law Group. We've not long moved into new premises in Sydney and we're looking to expand into other geographical areas of New South Wales. We're going to do that with a combination of building up a network of referral partners and a strategic approach to content marketing.

What other business leader do you most admire and why?

A relative of mine has run a number of businesses, many without success. His persistence has paid off though to the point where he has cracked the big time and now runs a billion-dollar publicly listed business. He became successful because he tried different things and kept at it.

What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received?

Be honest to yourself, be honest to your clients and work hard. You'll make your own luck if you get the simple things right.

What advice would you pass on to someone starting out in your area?

Get the basics right first. If you're a lawyer, like me, understand the law. Know your craft. Do your homework. Keep reading and be curious. Sometimes, good things take time. If you want to run a business, it's best to understand the fundamentals of your trade first.
