Boxing Day is set to drive a surge in shopping, according to new research by Finder.

A Finder survey of 1,005 respondents revealed 1 in 3 (33%) Australians – equivalent to more than 7 million people – plan to shop the Boxing Day sales in 2025.

Australian shoppers are expected to spend an average of $440 each over the sales period, adding up to an estimated $3.1 billion nationwide.

Younger shoppers are tipped to lead the spending, with gen Y saying they will fork out $477 on average, and gen X close behind at $467. Gen Z ($416) and baby boomers ($314) will be more mindful with their spending.

Rebecca Pike, money expert at Finder, said Boxing Day has become a major moment on the retail calendar, rivalled only by Black Friday.

"If you missed out on the Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales a few weeks ago, there will be plenty of chances to score bargains across both physical stores and online.

"That means plenty of opportunities to catch a bargain from home, without lining up or fighting the crowds."

Pike said preparation is key, as popular products often disappear fast once sales begin.

"Tracking prices ahead of time makes it much easier to spot real value when discounts drop.

"Signing up to retailer mailing lists can also pay off, with early access and subscriber-only offers often released before the public sales go live."

Pike said shoppers can stretch their savings even further by stacking up offers.

"Using cashback deals, loyalty points or credit card rewards alongside Boxing Day discounts can make a noticeable difference, particularly on higher-priced purchases.

"It's also important to be aware that some sale items come with tighter return conditions, so always read the fine print before checking out."

Pike said another sales period after Black Friday and an expensive Christmas could be another temptation to impulse buy and overspend.

"Don't get sucked into buying something you don't actually need just because it looks like a good deal. Stick to a list and have a strict budget in place."
