January is the perfect month to do a bit of life admin and set yourself up for success for the rest of the year.
And one item that should definitely be on your to-do list is re-assessing your internet plan.
Whether you know your current plan isn't serving your needs, you've been bitten by the cost of living or you just haven't looked at your options for a while, this January is the perfect time to set yourself up for the rest of the year.
👋 Hey there! Since we've partnered with iiNet, we'll be using some examples from its internet plans in this article. But always compare your options before signing up.
1. You could access faster internet elsewhere
We live in an online world where download and upload speeds are critical for ease of communication and access to all sorts of media.
Whether it's for working, streaming, gaming or just plain old browsin', you're feeling the need for speed.
But not every internet provider is created equal. While features like unlimited data have been standard for a while now, speed can vary wildly.
So if it's been a while since you upgraded your connection or plan, you may well be amazed at how much faster your internet could be with the right setup.
For example, iiNet's Home Wireless offers max download speeds of 20Mbps, which is perfect for those who mostly use their internet for browsing and occasional streaming.
But if you need some more grunt under the hood, there's also the 5G Plus plan which offers max download speeds of 50Mbps.
Additionally, there's also a 5G Premium plan with max download speeds of 100Mbps – ideal if you're a dedicated gamer or are in a line of work where you need to regularly transfer large files.*
2. There are short-term offers available in the market
One of the other great benefits of looking for a new internet plan at this time of year is that there are always great offers available for new customers.
By taking advantage of them at the right time, you can set yourself up for the school holidays and beyond, too.
With more people at home over this period, there's going to be more strain on the home internet. But with a faster plan in place, you'll be much better equipped to keep the whole family entertained.
To point to one example, iiNet is currently offering the first month of its Home Wireless Broadband and 5G Home Broadband plans on them – effectively allowing you to "try before you buy".
With an introductory offer like this, you're able to see whether the plan is a good fit for you, before committing longer-term.
3. Loyalty doesn't always reap rewards
Your internet is like any other utility connected to your house. So, you should be checking it at least once a year to see if you can get a better deal.
Although some providers do offer incentives for loyalty – such as discounts or upgraded plans – many others take a much more transactional approach.
So if you're annoyed seeing new customers reap the benefits while you get none for your loyalty, it's time to make a change.
Even if you ultimately end up staying with the same provider, you may be able to get a significantly better deal when you switch plans or upgrade.
4. You can find better value
If you haven't updated your internet plan for a few years, it's quite possible you're on an outdated deal.
Pricing is one of the most important considerations. You should be weighing up what you're paying for currently versus what else is available on the market.
For example, iiNet's Home Wireless and 5G plans start from $59.99 a month.
The other primary considerations for internet plans tend to be data, download speed and bonus inclusions.
So if you can get a better deal on any of these or save yourself some cash, why not?
It's also worth looking for a provider that offers no lock-in as part of its plan, too. That way, if you need to make a shift in future, you won't need to worry about running down a contract.
There's no point in forking over extra cash for no benefit. So why not do some investigating and see what's out there?

Important information about this website
finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
