Bonus seats and lower points needed for some routes - here are the details.

Got some Velocity Points you're keen to spend? Virgin just released 600,000 additional Reward Seats across its network.

As part of a Halloween promotion, Virgin is also offering cut-price seats on selected routes, with some seats going for 5,400 Velocity Points (plus charges).

Normally, the cheapest Reward Seats are 6,200 Velocity Points.

Those cut-points seats are available from 10:01am AEST on 31 October until 7 November - unless they all sell out earlier, which I'd say was very likely. (Note that will be 11am in NSW and Victoria - Virgin runs on Queensland time with no daylight savings.)

Availability of those seats runs up until 30 June 2024.

Virgin didn't announce details on which routes would see bargain seats, or how the 600,000 additional seats were distributed.

But we can be confident the 5,400 Velocity Point option will only apply to short-haul services, such as Sydney-Melbourne, Melbourne-Adelaide or Melbourne-Hobart.

These extra seats are all in Economy. I'm a big advocate for using Velocity Points for Economy.

While it's common to dream of a trip in "the pointy end of the plane" with a Business seat, the reality is those seats are tough to score and often grabbed by high-tier frequent flyers.

My analysis shows that you'll still get $10-$20 or more in value for each 1,000 Velocity Points you spend on a Reward Seat.
