Dollar Saver tip #43

Save: $156

Tip overview:

I just got my 6-month dental check up for free. You could be doing the same.

On Monday afternoon, I took out ahm Lifestyle Extras cover. I chose to pay weekly. The first payment cost me $18.41. After that, I'll pay $12.90 a week.

This policy has zero waiting period on general dental, so as soon as I took out a policy, I went to the ahm website and booked an appointment with Pacific Smiles, one of ahm's no-gap providers. They had a free spot for 8.30am the next day.

I had the policy for less than a day, but I was able to claim $174.

Services I claimed:

  • Examination: $53
  • Remove calculus: $92
  • Topical agent: $29
  • Total costs claimed: $174

Total savings: $174 - $18.41 = $155.59

Did you know?

New Finder research has found that nearly a third (31%) of Australians are considering switching or ditching their private health insurance policy.

At $12.90 a week, it's a little more expensive than a basic extras policy (from around $4 a week) but skipping waiting periods for general dental and optical definitely makes up for it.

I'll probably call ahm today to cancel or downgrade the policy. There's nothing stopping you from doing the same.
