NBN wants to give you up to 5 times faster internet speed – for free
NBN is proposing even faster speeds on 3 of its highest-speed internet plans.
NBN's latest proposal could see Australians on NBN 100, NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans get faster download speeds to meet existing as well as future household demand.
Here's what the new accelerated speeds could look like if the proposal goes through:
- NBN 100: From 100Mbps to 500Mbps
- NBN 250: From 250Mbps to 750Mbps
- NBN 1000: From 500-1000Mbps to 750-1000Mbps
NBN will be consulting internet providers to get feedback.
"We are proposing to deliver these accelerated speeds at no extra wholesale cost to internet retailers. By working together with the industry, we hope to deliver these accelerated services to customers later this year or early next year," Anna Perrin, Chief Customer Officer at NBN Co, said.
Will I be eligible for faster speeds?
If you're signed up to any of the plans in line for accelerated speeds, and have an HFC or FTTP connection type, then yes, you will be eligible.
This is especially good news for those on an NBN 100 plan, which is the second most popular speed tier in Australia after NBN 50.
"10 years ago, the average Australian home had seven internet-connected devices and consumed around 40 gigabytes per month. Today, some people would use that much data in a day," Perrin said.
The average household now consumes 443 gigabytes per month across 22 internet-connected devices. We predict that the average will grow to 33 connected devices by 2026 and 40 by the end of the decade.
If you're not signed up for any of these plans, you can go to NBN's website directly to see if you're eligible for faster speeds, especially under NBN's fibre upgrade program, which replaces ageing copper.
You can only trigger the upgrade if your property is on the list and you sign up for an NBN 100 plan or above.
Good to know: According to NBN, a recent Fortnite upgrade was around 25GB, which would take around 73 minutes to download, and consume all of the available bandwidth, on an NBN 50 plan. The same upgrade would take around 36 minutes to download on an NBN 100 plan.

NBN 250 and NBN 1000 can be a bit of an overkill for a lot of households, but NBN 100 is a good step up if your need for speed changes in 2024.
